Oral English 2: Lesson 11

12/3/2015

Hi everyone,

Once again, we had debates in today's lesson. We have just one more week of debates.

Debate Feedback:
This week, there was an improvement in debate skills, especially with the use of voice intonation. You spoke more loudly and used more word/sentence stress. For next week's debates, remember these points:
  1. When others speak, make sure to show interest (e.g. make eye contact, nod your head, use expressions like Uh-huh, I see, etc.)
  2. Use transitions to connect the different sections of your debate (e.g. Let's move on to our vocabulary. Let's move on to our debate.)
  3. You don't need to use transitions to introduce your opinion or attacks. You use opinion and refuting expressions to connect these two parts.

Homework:
  1. Complete debate #2 worksheet (group 2)
  2. Blog Post #10
  3. Presentation Vocabulary: write down example sentences from today's debates.
  4. My Vocabulary: write down 5 new words that you learn this week (e.g. in other classes, from watching TV/movies, etc.)
  5. Opinion: In the homework section of your notebook, write your opinion on one of the topics from today's debates. You have to agree or disagree. These were the topics: (1) nuclear energy; (2) euthanasia; (3) Tokyo 2020 Olympics; (4) smoking bans; and (5) performance-based pay.

Blog Question #10:

Do you think your English skills have improved this semester? Why or why not? Give examples.

* Write 12-15 sentences.
* Use capital letters, punctuation and spelling correctly.
* Submit by Wednesday, December 2 by 6:00pm.

I think my English skills have improved this semester. Because I became able to write composition in English than before. For example, It took about one hour to write composition in English before. However it takes only 30 minutes to write composition in English now. Another reason is that I became able to say my opinion clearly. For example, I was not able to say my opinion in English well before. However, now, I can tell the things which I want to tell in English better than before. Although my English skills have improved, this is not perfect.I have to make more effort to improve my English skill. Because I want to be an English teacher. There are still several times of classes of this semester. So I want to study English harder.

I think my English skills have improved this semester. Because I had a lot of chances to speak English at the oral session. I came to consider the device which makes sure that even English will be transmitted to a partner by this chance. For example when debating, I was careful as it wasn't a difficult sentence. When I sometimes found difficult terminology, I explained the word clearly. I was confirming whether an audience understands. But if it's the audience side, I still have weak point consciousness in English. It can't be done in English to think by oneself. Therefore a confidence to its English decreases so that I try to hand an opinion down to a person in English. If the word I'd like to express can't be made English well, the device which will be considered would like to be able to express differently. I'd like to exert myself in order to have a confidence in English at the remaining session.
I do my best.

I think my English skills have improved this semester. There some reasons. First I can speak English speedily and correctly now. This is because we do speed discussion every week. So I have become to say English clearly. And I can speak this classmates. Second I have much vocabulary than before. Because we write down vocabulary with meaning and sentence as a home work. It is very effective. Also recently I often watch movie in English. I can understand story a little. I am very happy. Such as these, I think my English skills have improved this semester.

I think my English skill have improved this semester. This is because there are two reasons.one reason is that I am good at writing sentences in English than before. For example,It took more a hour before to finish writing blog posting before. But,It takes just 30 minutes.I think I owe doing blog posting to improving my English skill. The other reason is that I can clearly show my opinion more than before. When my teacher made us many debates,I felt that it is cumbersome. However,as we did speed discussion, debate and so on,I learnd how to convey my thought.Because my teacher thought me it.So,It seems to me that my English skill have improved.I want to learn a lot of things in English.

In my opinion, my English skills have improved this semester. This is because I learned the skills to tell my opinion. For example, I learned the importance of reasons and examples. If I want to express my opinion, I should reveal the grounds of my opinion. This is because I have to prove the rightness of my opinion. For that reason, I must use the phrases to tell my opinion. I give another example. I learned the use of an index card. When I tell my opinion, I can read a presentation note instead of my worksheet. Thanks to using a presentation note, I can make eye contact with audiences. I learned a lot of skills to give my opinion. I would like to make use of the skills in the future.

In my opinion, my English skills have improved this semester. There are two points that I think that command of English improved. The first point is to have progressed listening comprehension in the second semester. For example, when I did a speed discussion and debate, I came to listen to the opinion of the partner smoothly. In addition, I often listened to the story of the partner again in the first semester. However, in the latter period, frequency to ask a partner again decreased. Moreover, I became able to understand contents. The second point is to be pleasant to write an English sentence. For example, it was very hard for me to write an English sentence so far. Moreover, I hated to write a sentence. However, it became pleasant for me to make a sentence while I made a sentence many times. I cannot yet write a sentence by wonderful constitution. However, I think that I improved listening comprehension and writing comprehension little by little.

I think my English skills have improved this semester. Especially, I feel my speaking ability has improved. Because we do a lot of speed discussion on this semester. Of course, I have taken many English class until now but there were not much chance to speak actually. There are many chance to speak this class. I am poor at talking in English and I am at a loss for words. However, speed discussion is very effective. I can translate Japanese to English earlier than before. I learn new words every week, so vocabularies increase, too. However, there are many people to speak English very well in class. When I see it, I am realized that I am not able enough. I want to treasure classes one by one from now on. I think I want to be able to develop English ability.

I think my English skills improved this semester. It is because that I acquired skills to speak English. For example, I could learn how to do discussion and debate. Before a year, I couldn't speak English as I wish to. However I could remember how to tell other people my opinion. Also, I could remember many words. I used many words in oral English class so I could remember the words naturally. If I didn't know words I wanted use, I thought other words instead of the words. Also I studied English even outside class. However I think my English skill isn't enough. I want to speak English fluently. I want to study English more.

My English skills have improved this semester. Firstly I have never been absent or late from this class all the year round. I think my attitude in class was good. I worked hard and I did my best all the time. I also did my homework completely. Secondly I learned a lot of English expressions during this semester. When I had discussions I used many kinds of expressions I learned. Actually they were very useful to express my opinions in the group. In addition, I could master discussion skills. Japanese people don’t use gestures and eye contact a lot. I understand these skills are important to attract people’s attention and let people know how I am serious. Thirdly for the debates I read books and papers both in English and Japanese. Especially I thought a lot about our topics, corporal punishment and nuclear power generation. It was nice to think deeply about serious social problems both in English and Japanese. Thanks to the debates I learned various aspects of the problems. I would like to thank Nicole and all my classmates who helped me a lot.

I think my English skills have improved. There are many growths points in my English ability. First, I have enriched my vocabulary. To increase it, I made notes whenever I meet with new words. And then, I checked it many times to memorise. Now, I don't have a opportunity to touch English, so this class is very important for me. Second, I have learned good pronunciation. In this class, there are a lot of good English speakers. They are good model for me, so I always imitate them. Third, I learned gestures. Before this class, I didn't show any gesture and it was bad for conversation. To use gesture, I can express my interests and my ideas. I think I want to continue these good learnings.

I think that my English skills have improved in this semester. There are several points. First, I came to be able to talk with members in English more smoothly than before. It is difficult for me to speak English so I didn't like to do. However thanks to this class, I got used to talking in English. Second, I can remember a lot of English words. Thanks to the bocabulary note, the number of words which I know increase. As I came to remember words more and more, it was easier to speak and write in English. So I came to like English. Third, I can learn pronunciations. In this class, when we do discussion and debate, we always learn new vocabularies' pronunciations. I wanted to get the right pronunciations so I was glad to have chances to learn them. Because studying English is important for us, I want to do my best from now on.

In my opinion, my English skills have improved. This is because I have a lot of chance to communicate with classmates. In this semester, we learned about how to make presentations, discussions and debates. I have never experienced them in English before this class. We are given many times to practice discussions, so I could get used to conversational style. I tried to make eye contact with others and to use gestures. Sometimes I felt it is hard for me, but I keep it in mind to work on every class positively. I’m glad to meet the special teacher Nicole, and my classmates. During this semester, I found some tasks. The most is I don't have enough vocabulary. I want to speak to use appropriate words. Therefore I will continue studying English from now on.

I think my English skills have not be improve so much in all. The reason why I think is I become to forget grammar. I can't make sentences to speak. I always use same fixed phrases. So, I have to memory again. However, I'm glad to learn how to presentation well. For example, sentences that move to next section and confirm listeners about understanding. In relation to communication, for example, how to give responses. Thanks to this semester's class, I think I can do presentation more smoothly. It is very important skill if I work for company use English. In addition, this class was interesting for me. When presentation, we can exchange each opinions more than last semester. I feel I try to speak positively any more.

I want to improve my English in this semester. Because next year I want to travel abroad with my friends. For example, I want to go to New York or London. English is always required there. Also, I hope to want to enjoy a conversation with the local people. I want to get along with the local people. Also, I want to enjoy shopping there. I love the brand of London. For example, Burberry, MACKINTOSH, Vivienne Westwood, Dr.Martens and so on. They are very pretty. I want to go shopping there by my self. So I want to improve my English.

I think my English skills have improved this semester. It is because we could have discussions in English many times. For example, first, through many discussions, I could acquire the ability of speaking in English more and more. I have ever thought I'm hopeless at speaking English. However, thanks to many discussions, I could gain confidence. I think speaking English is very important skill in globalization. Therefore, I want to try hard more. Second, I could understand and use a lot the expression of discussion in English. In addition, through discussions, I could learn a lot of vocabularies. I want to use them after this. Finally, through this semester, I could gain many important things not only English skills and I could develop. I was very glad and I would like to try hard after this!
