Oral English 2: Lesson 3

4/24/2015

Hi everyone,

In today's lesson we had our first group of discussions. Before we started our discussions, we went through the steps for leading a discussion. Please bring this worksheet to every class, especially if you are a discussion leader.

Discussion Feedback:
  1. When you have your discussion, you need to use English Conversational Style.  English conversational style is very different from the Japanese one.  During a discussion, you can "jump in" at any time to ask a question or to make a comment.  You don't have to wait to be invited to speak during a discussion.
  2. Prepare vocabulary cards if you are a discussion leader next week. You need to teach your vocabulary to your group before you give your summary. When you teach your vocabulary, make sure to have a short pronunciation practice.  In order to remember a word, you need to know how to pronounce it. Please see the Vocabulary Teaching handout at the end of the posting
Absences:
Today, there were 7 students who did not come to class. If you are not a discussion leader, and you miss class without a good reason, you will lose points from your own discussion. Please attend class so that there are enough group members for discussions.

Homework:
1.  Discussion Preparation
2.  Blog Post #3

Blog Question #3:

FOR GROUP MEMBERS:
Give yourself a score out of ten for your participation in today's group discussions.  Why do you think you deserve this score? Give reasons and/or examples to support your answer.

Example:
In today's class, I would give myself a score of 8/10 for my participation.  First of all, I asked my group leader when I didn't understand vocabulary.  For example, I asked the group leader to tell me the meaning of "gun control" and "amendment."  Second, I gave examples about Japan's gun control in the discussion.  However, I didn't always make eye contact with all my group members, so this is something I need to improve next week.

FOR GROUP LEADERS:
Give yourself a score out of ten for your performance as a group leader.  Why do you think you deserve this score?  Give reasons and/or examples to support your answer.

Example:
In today's class, I was the group leader.  I would give myself a score of 8.5/10 for my performance.  First of all, I checked my group's understanding about 4 times during my summary.  Also, I encouraged all my group members to participate.  I asked them directly for their opinions and asked them to make comments the opinions of other group members.  However, I forgot to do a pronunciation practice for my vocabulary, so I need to do this for my next discussion.
  • Write 8-10 sentences.
  • Use capitalization, punctuation & spelling correctly.
  • Submit by Wednesday, April 29 by 6:00pm.

In today’s class, I was the group leader. I would give myself a score of 7/10 for my performance. First of all, I could explain by a body language. My group members saw and understand each my movement.
Also, I remembered to do a pronunciation practice for my vocabulary. My group member repeated with loud voice following my later.
However, I should speak while doing more eye contacts. I need to do this for my next discussion.

I give myself 8/10 scores.Because It was vocabrary question time,I was very activity to answer meaning of vocabrary.I also told you my thought clearly. But the speed at which I spoke English isn't smooth.the way I listened what the leader said is bad.So I must change it. I will be group leader.I'll do my best to make myself understood in presentation.

In today's class,I would give myself a score of 7/10 for my participation.First,I listen leaders speaking their story concentratively.Second,I ask leaders questions about their
story. However, separately from good points, there were a bad point.A bad point is that my body language is not good. For example,I cross an arm ,rest the elbow and so on.So,I gave myself a score of 7/10 for my participation.Next,I want to make an effort to be able to give myself a better score.

I was the group leader in the last week's class. I would give myself a score of 7/10 for my performance. Because I was able to announce it magnificently. And
I think that what I wanted to convey was handed down to group members. But
I have forgotten that I shared the exercise of the word once. As for the next time, I want to be careful at this point. Also It is difficult to tell my thought to group members precisely to have felt today's class. Through this class, I want to develop skill to talk more.

In today's class, I would give myself a score of 7/10 for my participation. First of all, I made an effort to make an eye contact with the group leader. I think this is one of the good way to understand leader's speech. So, I could be concentrating on listeing leader's speech, too. Second, I couldn't gesture very much. Of course, leader should gesture to understand his speech. But, I couldn't tell my opinion well. So, I need to gesture. I will make an eye contact all of members and make a lot of gestures when I am a leader.

In last week class, I was the group leader. I would give myself a score of 6/10 for my performance.
In discussion,I could advance the discussion as group leader. And I could comment about opinion of group members.
But I felt it is difficult to speak immediately.I couldn't think of the right word.So I need to build up my vocabulary. And I want to accommodate more question by the time I become next discussion reader.

I would give myself a score of 7/10 for my participation. I have good and bad points about my performance. When we were doing first discussion, I didn't tell my group members my opinion about my group leader's topic a lot. Because I regretted that I couldn't do my ideal participation, when we were doing second and third discussion, I tried to tell them my opinion more active. And I could answer the meaning of vocabulary assertive. Because I'm not good at speaking English with other people, it is difficult for me to speak smoothly without thinking slowly and carefully in discussion. So I want to develop my speaking skill through this discussion project. In the next class, I'm to be a group leader. So I would like to tell my group members my opinion clearly.

In today's class, I was the groupe leader. I would give myself a score of 7/10 for my performance. First, I explained the summary of the article. I think I can tell my groupe members simply. Also, I put the gestures to good use. When I explained about a cavity, I opened my mouth wide and I acted as if I have a pain. However, I should have prepared more opinions and questions, so I subtract 3 points. In the next class, I would like to try to speak actively!

I would give myself a score of 6/10 for my participation. I tried to understand group leader's speech. I asked about what I couldn't understand too. I think these two points are good. However, I couldn't make good eye contact. In addition, I couldn't insist on my opinion. I think these two points are bad. So I tried to make better eye contact and insist on my opinion next week.

I am learning what a good discussion is. I think the most important thing for a lively discussion is to listen to the discussion leader. Then we carefully think about the topics. Once we need to express our opinions, we shouldn’t be shy or hesitate to speak out. The body language including eye contact is necessary. In the last class I was a discussion member. I think my attitude to the last discussion was excellent. I would give myself a score of 10/10 for my participation. In the next class I will be a discussion leader. I would like to lead our group discussion to a good one.

In today's class, I would give myself a score of 4/10 for my participation. First of all, I could hardly keep up with presentation of group leaders because I'm not good at listening and following English sentences. For that reason, I want to improve my listening comprehension. Second, I could not give my opinion well because I could not remember words immediately. For example, I could not remember the word "repair" and asked the group members to tell me the word. I was ashamed of forgetting meaning of words. I want to memorize a lot of meaning of words. And, I wish to have good discussions.

In today’s class, I was a group member.I would give myself a score of 7 / 10 for my participation. When I listened to my group leaders’ performances, I asked some questions. And I gave my opinion for them.
But I could not speak English clearly. And I could not understand their performances’ contents once. Therefore my score is 7.Next time, I want to speak English clearly and understand the contents.

I was a group leader in today's discussion. Look back on my action, I would give myself a score of 6/10.
My article is "Robots will be more intelligent than humans by 2029". A point to be improved is that I feel the article I chosen was difficult for members to give opinions. Because it was hard to imagine robots clearly.
Good point is silence has decreased compared the first discussion with the third discussion. I want to discussion smoothly when I act as a leader next time.
This time, I was able to know flow of discussion. Next time, I want to be Speak positively.

In the third class, I give myself a score of 6/10. First, I couldn't understand contents that group leader talked perfectly. I guess it is because I am not used to listening English everyday life. Second, When I was asked question, I was not able to answer immediately. So, I try to think question and my opinion while group leader is taiking. Third, I made eye contact with my group members a little and I could't talk using gestures. I should use them in order to understand my opinion easily. So, I need to improve them next week.

However, I could understand about it, I felt regret that I have it which I couldn't understand part. Second I couldn't express things which I think about it in English. Though I had many things to say for everyone, I couldn't convert Japanese to English. So I have many subjects that I have to get over. I want to speak English. Therfore I tought that i must practice English.

In today's class, I was athe group leader.I give myself the score of 8/10 for my performanse. Before the performanse,I cared of the speed of speaking.actually,in my performanse,I could speak slowly and everyone could understand.
I think I made good discussion questions. So we could speak a lot about question better than opinions. However I have Bat points. First, I chose the difficult theme. Everyone could understand the topic but,They couldn't say theirs opinions. And speaking summary, I don't know what to say. So I have to do for next leader.

In today's class, I would give myself a score of 6/10 for my participation. There are two reasons. First, I could listen and speak making eye contact with group members. In addition, I tried to listen to speeches while making appropriate responses. I think I tried hard as a listener. Second, I had difficulty in saying my opinions a little. I think I'm not used to saying my opinions in English. When I visited New York city, I couldn't speak well. So, I want to gain experience in this class and improve my skills. Finally, I would like to do fruitful discussions next time making use of these points for improvement.

I absented the last class. So, I can't refer about discussion. Maybe, everyone would exert themself. The next class , I exert myself. I'd like to tell clearly my opinion by discussion. And to hear other person's opinions.

In last week's class, I would give myself a score of 7/10 for my participation. There were 3 good points for me in the discussion. First, I pronounced 5words in a loud voice. Second, I tried to make eye contact with my group readers. Finally, I asked group readers many questions about their articles, which made the discussion active.
However, I could not catch what leaders were saying well. I should have request that they speak slowly and loudly. Tommorow, I will pay attention to this.
