Hi everyone,

It was really great to meet all of you yesterday.  I'm really looking forward to our lessons this year.

Syllabus and Schedule:
In the first period, we had a short introduction activity in which you got to meet your classmates.  We then went through the syllabus and our course schedule.  All of this information is in the IE 3 Course Information section. We have a lot of work to do this semester, so if you have any difficulties with our course, make sure you let me know so that I can help you.

Discussion Worksheet:
We learned how to complete a discussion worksheet. You will have to download the worksheet and complete it before your discussion.  The discussion sheets are in the Discussion Skills section.  You can either type or write your worksheet.  There are also links to different English language newspaper sites in the Useful Links section.

The power point presentation on How to Complete your Discussion worksheet is also in the Discussion Skills section if you need to review it while completing your worksheet.

Opinion Giving:
We had a short activity to help you learn some expressions for giving your opinion and for agreeing and disagreeing with opinions.  Make sure to support your opinion with a reason and/or example.  When you want to ask for somebody's opinion, you can use these expressions:
1.  What are your feelings on this?
2.  What do you think about this?

Homework:
1.  Journal entry #1 / Topic:  self-introduction
2.  Discussion Preparation
3.  Blog Posting #1

Have a great weekend!

Blog Question #1:

What has been one of the most memorable experiences in your life?

* Write 8-10 sentences.
* Use capital letters, punctuation and spelling correctly.
* Submit by Tuesday, April 16 by 6:00pm.

I had an experience to stay in Scotland for 3 weeks when I was in junior college. That was the first time to go to Europe, the atmosfere is so great. Especially I love to walk down the streest near the Edinburgh University. I went there to study English whole of my staying time. There are 2 types of class, grammar and activity. I like to have the activity class because every time teachers gave us different activities. If possible, I would like to go there again and express my feeling and thinking to the teachers.

Part-time job is the most memorable experience for me. I started a part-time job at a hotel as a bell girl when I was a junior college student. Many foreigners visit our hotel and ask various questions to us. I learned importance of communication then. In case of foreigners who are from Indian, I can’t express in Indian so I express of using gestures. I felt gestures are important our life then. There are many opportunities of talking with foreigners. I like times that spend with guests and communication with them. I thought I want to learn about communication so I take communication subjects at this university now. I would like to make friends all over the world for the future.

Trip to Korea is one of the most memorable experiences in my life. I went there a year ago and it was the first time for me to go abroad. I was little nervous because there are cultural differences between Japan and Korea ,and also I could not speak Korean well. However, I felt these were not big problems. I enjoyed all the time and talked to a lot of persons during the trip. Then I learned trying to understand each other is most important to communicate with people all over the world.

I went to New Zealand and studied English one year ago. I stayed a small town which is called Whitianga. I had a valuable experience at there. My language school was too small, but it admitted many kinds of country's students. For example, there were Japanese, Korean, French, Swiss, and Saudi Arabian. I talked with them about our country, future, studying, and so on. I think that I couldn't have this experience if I didn't leave Japan. My host family treated me like a member of family. Many Japanese friends who I met there are good friends even now. I would love to visit there with them again someday.

I did a volunteer work when I was a junior college student. I played with children who can't live with their parents for various reasons. At first, I was troubled because I don't know how to treat them. They had various characters each and I felt some stress on it. One day,I decided that I do it easily. I tried to understand them little by little. I tried to communicate each child as much as possible and I enjoyed it myself, too. As time went on, I realized that I was being helpful to others and it was so valuable experience for me. I could understand the excellence of the volunteer activity and also learned the importance of continuing things enjoyably.

The most memorable experience is the tour of Europe in this spring vacation. I participated in the tour with my friend as a graduation trip of a junior college. The tour member came from all over the world, America, Canada, Australia, Brazil and Japan. In this tour group, it chanced that there are a lot of Japanese. However, my friend and I tried to talk and act with people who weren’t Japanese. It was good experience for me, but I had a problem. When I talked in English, occasionally I couldn’t explain what I want to say. After that, I thought I have to study English more, and I want to talk about many topics in English. I learned that the ability of speaking is so important. So especially, I'd like to study and practice of speaking in this class.

The experience to stay at New Zealand is my precious memory. I have studied English and the history of New Zealand in Christchurch for one year. I went to the high school on the spot and had a good time with friends from New Zealand and other foreign countries. I also could learn Maori language because my host father was a descendant of Maori. At the last term to stay the school, Japanese students including me visited a kindergarten and a home for the elderly. We sang Christmas songs, taught the way to make “Origami”, and played "Little Red Riding-Hood" there. My role was a heroine to my surprise, so I acted it with pleasure. We were happy to see that a lot of people enjoyed our project with their smiles. I would love to visit New Zealand soon.

I had an experience to enjoy the tea ceremony with exchange students from Australia. I was a member of the tea ceremony club at high school, and 13 exchange students participated in our club during their stay. Their stay was 3 weeks and most of them attended lessons everyday. Though they weren't used to sitting straight, they held out till lessons finished. Some of them didn't like the taste of green tea, but they attended lessons everyday and said that they liked the atmosphere of the tea ceremony. I was delighted to hear that. I couldn't explain what I wanted to say and was unreliable, but they managed to understand what I wanted to say with smile. I was really impressed by them. This experience made me want to study English.

Having been to England is one of the most memorable experiences for me. I stayed there for three years when I was in high school. Surprisingly, I didn't go to British school, but Japanese school in spite of staying England. However it was Japanese school, it had the original curriculum for improving English skill. For example, I had four speaking classes in a week. Also, the science class held in English. It was really stress for me because I had to study English a lot, but it became a good experience.
I’m not sure whether my English has improved or not, I’m very thanks to my parents now.

My most memorable experience is having witnessed Ichiro’s grand slam. In 2009, I went to America and watched a baseball game between Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels at Safeco Field in Seattle. It was Ichiro’s returning game after missing 8 games because of a bleeding ulcer so I cheered him up enthusiastically. The home run came in the seventh inning. It was his 3085th career hit and that tied Japanese baseball player Isao Harimoto’s record. I was deeply fascinated by his shot. What was more surprising, Mariners beat Los Angeles Angeles 11-3. That was the most exciting game I have ever watched. I still have the ticket of the game and always carry it in my wallet. I would like to watch Ichiro’s home run once again.

Travel to Singapore is one of the most memorable experiences in my life. I enjoyed various Singapore cuisine in the trip and I found my most favorite food; chicken rice. Also I walked around the city using the metro and the bike which is like a Jinrikisha in Japan. There are some towns in Singapore, for example, little india , china town, and Arab street, and there are a lot of beautiful building in each town. I felt that it seemed like traveling around many
Asian countries in one country. It was so exciting that I tried to speak Singaporean English and communicate with people. I would like to go to Singapore again soon and if I can, I want to live in there because the city is so beautiful, food is delicious, and people are kind. But it is too hot to live for me, so I would like to trip to there when winter come to Japan.

The most memorable experience in my life would have to be the 2 years I spent at Aoyama Gakuin Women's Junior College. First, it was the first time I got to spend from school start to graduation at a Japanese school. I moved to United States when I was 5 years old, so I did not have the chance to go to elementary, middle school, and high school in Japan. Another reason it was memorable for me was because I got to make many friends my age. They were 2 years younger than me, but we got to talk about many things in common. I didn't have many Japanese friends my age since I didn't have a chance to meet any until I went to this school. Also, since it was a women"s college, I got to meet many different types of girls that I probably would not have talked to, if I went to a mixed education college. Third, the school was located in Shibuya, so I got to go to many places in Shibuya that many people would want to go, if they came to Tokyo for sightseeing. To sum up, I am glad that I went to Aoyama Gakuin Women's Junior College.

The most memorable experience is cheering up the baseball team. When I was high school student, the highschool baseball team won a competition of hokkaidou convention. I belonged to a blass band club, so I went to Hyougo Prefecture to cheer up the baseball team for free. The game was most exciting. I played the horn with heart and soul. Unfortunately, they lost the game to their opponent, but I thank them for moving me. I'm proud of the baseball team. If my highschool baseball team win the hokkaidou convention, I want to support the baseball team again. p.s. I'm sorry about making a comment too late.
