IE3 Fall 2013:  Lesson 8

11/15/2013

Hi everyone,

Christmas is just around the corner!  Store decorations and Christmas lights are already up throughout Tokyo!

Interactions Feedback:
As part of your listening feedback, I demonstrated how to do shadowing with an audio file.  Shadow practice will help you become a more fluent and natural speaker, and also help you with catching "elision" (=when words join together to produce a single phrase).

Examples:
  • What do you want?  = Whaddya want?
  • Let me have it.  = Lemme have it.
  • I want a vacation.  = I wanna vacation.

Shadowing Steps:
  1. Play the entire audio 2-3 times.  Listen only.
  2. Play the first sentence.  Pause.  Repeat the sentence (using the same speed and intonation).
  3. Play the next sentence.  Pause.  Repeat it.
  4. Continue until you have finished the audio file.
  5. Play the entire audio.  As the audio plays, repeat each sentence.

Presentation Visuals:
For the second part of our lesson, we spent time on learning about different types of visual aids and how to make powerpoint slides.

Type of Visuals:
When you prepare your slides for your presentation, you can use a variety of visuals, such as:
  1. Graphs:  bar, pie and line graphs
  2. pictures:  photos, illustrations, maps and diagrams
  3. charts:  title, overview, bullet and flowcharts

Classroom Behavior:
In today's class, I also had to remind you of our course expectations and behavior.  Please be aware of our course guidelines (which you received the first day of class and are on the website):
  1. You are to arrive on time for class.  Train delays are not an acceptable excuse.  Leave your home earlier enough to avoid these delays.
  2. It is not acceptable to tell me that you cannot do your interaction on the day of your interaction.  You are to notify me at least one day before and provide a medical certificate.  However, this does NOT guarantee that I can change the schedule for you.
  3. Emailing me  and asking me to WAIT before I begin MY lesson until you arrive is absolutely not acceptable behavior.  This is rude and disrespectful to me and your classmates.
  4. Those students who have been absent more than four times (=90-minute period) without medical documentation can receive no higher than a grade of 60% for our course.  This is a English department rule for the IE Program; you received this information during orientation.

Homework:
1.  Interactions
2.  Listening Report #6
3.  Really English Units #16-20
4.  Presentation Outline:
  • due Friday, November 22 by 12:00 noon by email
