IE3 Fall 2013:  Lesson 3

10/9/2013

Hi everyone,

Can you smell the ginko nuts on campus?  They were really stinky this morning!

Interactions:
We had our first round of listening interactions.  I was really impressed that ALL of you remembered many of our discussion skills from last semester, such as using showing interest and making eye contact.

The feedback from today's interactions is attached at the end of this entry.  For next week's leaders, please include these pointers into your interactions.

Really English:
I gave you new registration cards for the Really English website, and you were able to register for the program.

We have 35 units to complete for this program, so try to do 3-4 units each week.  If you do this, you won't have any homework over the Christmas break.

To log-in to your account after you have registered, you need to go to this link:

http://ac.reallyenglish.com/aoyama/account

If you missed our lesson, you will need to set up your Really English account by yourself.

Listening Activity:  Phobias and Superstitions
In the second part of our lesson, we had a listening lesson about phobias and superstitions.

There were a few new vocabulary terms from the dialogue:
a.  surpass = overcome
b.  conversely = oppositie of something
c.  freak out = become crazy

You did a good job with your discussions afterwards.  I never knew that snakes will come if you whistle in the evening!

Homework:
1.  Listening Interactions preparation (see schedule)
2.  Listening Report #2
3.  Really English Units 1-5
4.  Blog Post #3

Blog Question #3:

Tell me about your experience in your first Listening Interactions in today's class.

For example, if you were the group leader, what did you do well? what were some difficulties? etc.

If you were a group member, what did you think of the activities?  What were some difficulties? etc.

*Write 8-10 sentences.
*Use capitalization, punctuation & spelling correctly.
*Submit by Tuesday, October 15 by 6:00pm.

At the time of preparations, I paid attention to choose my topic not to be too difficult to understand. There was some videos that was nice topic but too difficult to listen and I couldn't understand the contents well. In my opinion, it is better for me to start videos that matches my level of listening in order to continue my study longer. At first, I was worried that whether my topic can get our members interest or not. However, it was unnecessary worry. All of my interaction members told each other their interesting experiences and nice opinion. I was glad to hear that and that was helpful for me. Through the activity, I felt that the time distribution was difficult for me. I spent much time on pre-listening questions so I couldn't take enough time for other activities. I have to be careful that next time.

In touday's firt Listening Interactions, I was the group leader. It was quite hard not to give out the answers while trying to get the members to talk during the pre-listening activities. Another thing I found hard was, some members of the group did not want to participate. Some people were not listening to the discussion and were doing their own things. It was upsetting that we had to stop the discussion sometimes to explain what we were doing. Also, there was a problem with the computer once, so I had to rush through the activity. Other than what I listed, I think it was a successful discussion, and gave me a really good practice on listening to British accented English.

It was a little bit awkward for two reasons. First, we don't know how to do activities well. We did our activities remembering the last class imformation. It took time. Secondly, leaders couldn't contorol the time. In our second discussion, we discussed pre-listening question over 10 minutes. We couldn't spend enough time for post listening questions. Of course it was the first time, so controling is so difficult. I guess we could recognize the time distribution in this class, and next leaders will be able to control the time.

I was a group member in our first Listening Interactions. It was a little bit difficult for me to do that because it was the first time. Nicole taught us how to do as a group member and the leader by using an actual example. Thanks to that, we knew the order and what we had to do in the activity but I was kept long. There is time constraints to finish the activity each time so I shoud get used to it as soon as possible. Other than that, I enjoyed Listening Interactions. For example, I could get some interesting information from videos and I had a good discussion with my group members. I think that this work will improve my listening ability.

I was the group reader in the last class. I had some difficulties and things I did well. It's first time to do listening interactions, so at first  I couldn't do it smothly because I confused how I did it effectively. For example, I wonder whether I should introduce the words before listening the video or after. However, we had two times to do it, so I gradually understood how I did. The good things were that I could ask every interaction members extra questions, and they gave me their idea. So I enjoyed it as a group reader. In the next interactions listening, I'd like to give my idea as a group member.

I was a group leader last week. I had some difficulties because it was first time. In my home, I had a trouble finding a video. I worried about whether I could dictate and make activities, so I needed to choose a video which was not so hard. Also, I cared about that my group members felt it interesting or not. In the class, I was very awkward to proceed the Listening Interaction. I couldn't lead my group members well and I was helped by them so many times. Thanks for their supports, I was somehow able to go through the activities. Next time, I should control groups better.

In last week's listening interaction I was a group member. It was the first time to do the listening interaction so I sometimes got confused about what I should do next. But the leaders of my group did a very nice job on the presentation so it really helped me and gave me a lot of clues on how to gather up the group when I am the group leader. Also I had difficulties on getting some of the words and noticed that I have to learn more vocabularies. I am the group leader the next week and I am having a very hard time on searching for a interesting video with English easy hear. I fell a iot of pressure because as a group leader I have to get the exact right words to make my questions. I hope that through this activity I can attain the ability to do a good presentation and higher listening skills.

I was a gorup member and I enjoyed my first time listening interaction. Listening video like that style is the first time for me, so I was looking forward to do it. Two group leaders choose an interesting topic, so I was fun to listen that video. That was not so much difficult because I could listen a few times and it was easy to understand the content. The most impressed thing is that they could catch every words on video. I thought that was so much hard working. So I was getting nervous to do it on my turn. But I want to group members are fun to listen video, so I will do my best on my turn. I had never studied listening like this style, but I think that our listening skills will absolutely improve two months later.

I was a group member last week. I enjoyed the first Listening Interactions with my friends, but there were some difficulties. Last semester, we learned about good conversational style. However, I think we couldn't do it well. Our conversation was a typical Japanese style in places. In addition, time allotment was also difficult. One Listening Interactions was limited to about twenty minutes, but we couldn't finish to the end. On the other hand, I thought this activities is good way to improve our listening ability because we can see many videos every week. I want to do better discussion next time.

Since I was absent from last class, I couldn't participate in the first Listening interaction. Reading classmates' blogs, I received the impression that the Listening interactions have some difficulties. For example, some classmates wrote that it was difficult to control the time. Moreover, I received the impression that it improves our listening abilities. I want to improve my listening ability on this occasion. I'm looking forward to next Listening interaction.

In the last class, I was a group member. The topics leaders chose were really interesting, so I enjoyed watching the video and the discussion. Also, I thought group leaders nicely used discussion skills that we learned in the first semester. For example, keeping eye contact and using gestures made the discussion easier to understand. However, I felt leaders couldn’t take care of the time for the discussion. The members were puzzled for a little as well because it was the first time to have Listening Interaction class. Therefore I suppose the leader has to catch the suitable timing to move to the next work during the discussion. I will be a leader in the next class, so just keep it in mind and try to have good discussions.

I was a group member when doing the first Listening Interaction class. Before starting the class, I had a little confidence for listening, but I felt I need to study more. This is because I am not good at hearing British English and even if it were American English, it is difficult to hear if it had blending. Also, there were some words I did not know, so I need to remember vocabularies more. Furthermore, I felt it is difficult to make interactions. The leaders made blanks and wrote down a listening part all the way through. Actually, one of the leader said “It took hours!” So I felt I should take time to make Interactions and I need to study listening more and more.

I had some difficulties in the first listening interaction at the last Wednesday. First of all, I could not complete any words in the blanks and catch the entire meanings of the video. I thought our listening skills are different, so I need to be a listening leader who can give easier interaction to my members. And as a group member, I should say honestly "I can't follow you", "please explain this one more time"and some reactions to leaders when I cannot understand it. I sometimes nod or say "I see" even though I cannot understand. Therefore, I'll try to say the questions in the listening interaction tomorrow.

I have not joined both disscusion and demonstration so I couldn't tell my experience. I guess it is very hard but useful to improve my listening skills from classmates' comments. I feel I need to practice more to catch any words. Concretely I should know more words because I can't listen words I don't know. I think I should also react for leader to make discussion rich in content. I try to show interest more than last semester. I will disscuss as the leader the weel after next, so I will refer to actual discussion. I want to try to have good discussions this semester as well.

I think my group leaders did great activity in my first Listening Interactions. They have interesting themes and show us nice presentaion. It is hard for me to hear video for one time. So I sometimes couldn't understand that because its English is fast. However, my group members kind for me explain contents of video simply. When I will a group leader, I want to take care whether all people can join discussion and understand what I say. When I will a group leader, I should understand the level of skills in my peer English are different. Anyway,It is a good opportunity to improve my skill in English.

In the first Listening Interaction, I was a group of member. It was hard for me to catch the British accents. I was surprised that I couldn't understand what it said. I realized that I have to study more for listening. I thought I want to be able to listen many kinds of English accents. Also I worried about next week's Listening Interaction. I will be a leder in next week. I thought I have to find exact topic that my group member can talk about the topic easily.
