Hi everyone,

I hope you're all enjoying the holidays.

In our last class for 2013, you got the chance to meet my NPO partner and ask him questions about his life and Cambodia.  You then received your last letter from your Cambodian partner.  As usual, you had time to discuss your letters and ask questions about your partner.

After the break, we brainstormed ideas about education in Japan.  You can use these ideas and information from the handouts to write your final letter to your partner.  Remember to bring it to class on January 9.

Letter #3 Structure:
a.  comment on your partner's letter and give recent news
b.  write on the new topic (your education in Japan)
c.  answer your partner's questions
d.  give contact information (e.g. email or Facebook)

  • Remember to write 5-6 pages and include pictures/photos.

Homework:
1.  Really English Units (finish all units)
2.  Blog Comment #10
3.  Letter #3 (theme:  your education in Japan)
4.  Writing Exchange Survey

For the survey, you can either write or type it.  Make sure to email it to me before our lesson on January 9 or to bring it to class on January 9.

You can download the survey after our blog summary.

Our las class of the year was amazing. I enjoyed having the cupcake Nicole baked for us. Also, we finally got meet Nicole's NGO partner, Shally. It was a short meeting but I learned lots from him. The thing I remember most about his speech was the he said everyone in Cambodia always has a smile on. I could see this through this through his attitude too. He always spoke with a smile and carried out the class discussion with a positive attitude. It was also memorable that he said the students at BEA thinks education as the center of their lives. Shally too loves BEA and told us that he plans to go overseas to study more at a university. I've been having a hard time with job hunting but he gave me hope through his speech. Shally talked about having dreams and goals in life which helped me to think more about my future and to have more hope. I really enjoyed meeting Shally I hope he had a good time with us and in Japan.

I had a great time with Shally in last week's class. I asked him about Cambodian educational problem and he answered it politely. All of his words were very impressive for me. I can't forget that he said to us confidently with smile, "Cambodian people don't have anything, but we are happy." I thought whether I can say the same thing or not. The answer might be "No". I explained to him about one of Japanese educational problem bullying and suicide of the children. He seemed to be shocked very much to hear that. In Japan, we are brought up surrounded by many things. In a childfood, we can get almost anything we want by asking our parents. Even though, we have many things, it doesn't mean that we are happy. I deeply felt irony at this point. It was an good opportunity for me to think about what is happiness for me.

We met Shally and had wonderful time with lovely brownies and snacks. That’s why this year’s last class was very enjoyable. Shally was so funny person because while he was saying “I’m not hungry!”, he continued to eat snacks (especially senbei). One of the most impressive things is that he was always saying me “talk, talk, talk”. I was encouraged by him and I tried to talk like him. It was also impressive that he told us about himself and Cambodia. He said Cambodian people don’t have so many things but they are always smile and happy. From his speech, I felt many Cambodian people’s hearts are filled with happiness even if they don’t have many stuff. I have visible things like my clothes and computer and mobile phone. However, I don’t know whether I can satisfy me without these equipments. He made me think what the most important thing is in my life. To sum things up, it was not only enjoyable class, but also made me think about what the valuable thing is in my life.

I had a great time in our last class of 2013. Nicole's NGO partner, Shally came to our class and we could talk with him. I think he is a amazing person who have power, intelligence, kindness, passion and also humor. We learned many true stories about Cambodia and Cambodian people from him. Especially, I was glad to hear the personality of my Cambodian partner. I cannot go to Cambodia easily so it was a precious experience for me to meet Shally. He taught us what is important to live happily. I think that the most important thing is smiling as he said. I should think more about my life and the world. We could eat Nicole's special cakes again and it was so delicious. Thank you for baking and I hope you will have a great year!

I had a good time with Shally in last class. First of the class, I talked with Shally. Then he was smiling and talk very kindly even if we met the first time. I got nervous but I could enjoy to talk with him thanks to him. In question time, I could know I felt irony about Cambodia. Moreover, I thought I would like to go to Cambodia some day. I didn't know about Cambodia. I have introduce Cambodian education on group presentation before. However, to listen Shally's talk is easy to understand because he know about Cambodia. He helped for us. The end of the class, I was surprised because Nicole made for us a lot of cup cakes. It was very delicious and I never forget! I wish you have a great year 2014!!

At the our last class in 2013, I had a wonderful chance to meet Nicole's NGO partner, Shally. I think he is so bright person and has a big desire to study. From his speech, I could understand the environment of Cambodian education is different from Japanese one. For example, he told us how he studied English. There are not enough textbooks, good educated teachers and so on. But, he never give up to enrich his English. On the other hand, there are lots of textbooks, great teachers and good environment in Japan, but also there are many people who have less motivation to study than Shally. I want to review my English study and study harder than now.

I felt it was a nice time to see Shally to know about Cambodia more deeply. I hadn't think he was from BEA and he couldn’t speak English at first. How amazing he speaks English well. He showed us if we do our best, we can do. However, what I should have was aske him how to write my name in Khmer. What I need to learn from him was, when he speeches, he stood very confidently. When I had a presentation, I got panicked so I wonder how I can speech like him. Also, what I surprised was Nicole to make a cute cupcake for us. It was great taste and I want Nicole to tell me how to make it. Anyway, it was a good class and thank to Nicole and Shally to give us great time.

Because my condition was not good, I couldn't take part in the first period. However, I could also met Shally. I thought he was a excellent, humorous, and funny teacher. The experience to learn about Cambodian education from him directly was instructive for me. I was glad to see him. In addition, I could receive a letter from my Cambodian partner. I was looking forward to read a next one. From Shally, the letter and our class, I could know same things and different things of education between Japan and Cambodia. This letter was the last, however, I want to continue to exchange our countries' information with my partner. Besides the class, Nicole's cupcakes were also great! It was the wonderful class for me.

I thought the last class of 2013 was wonderful time with Shelly. All time I could see his big smile and joke. Also his smile made me happy and smile. In addition, he told me very important thing. It was 'we are poor but, we are happy'. His smile and enjoyable character showed it. After I heard this, I wondered what happy is for me. It was helpful for my job haunting. I thought I should remember it forever. Also when I asked about English study, he answered he made progress after meeting teacher Nicole, so I thought Cambodian English system is not good, and good teachers like Nicole are few in Cambodia. However, Shelly studied English by watching Nicole's mouth ,and speak a lot whenever. I was surprised to hear that. I thought I have to make more effort to do everything. It was so impressive class.

I was absent our last class of 2013 because I had a fever and I can't go out. I am sorry that I can't write our last class. So I talk about last year's class and my partner's letter. Last year, It is the most impressive activity for me to exchange letter with my Cambodian partner. I realize we have a bias so it is imortant to hear from local. After exchange letter twice, I and my partner became more friendly. It is very happy for me because I can communicate somebody in the world by a way of Englsih. Also, I learn a lot of things from him. He told me life, education, festival in Cambodia and so on. It is exciting for me to write his letter. Writing exchange program is great opportunity for me.

Unfortunately I couldn't attend the last day of class because I felt sick. But somehow I was able to arrive just before the second period was going to end and got my last letter from my partner. I got to see Shally and when I entered the class he gave me his seat and I thought thet he is very kind and that his has a very good smile. Although at that time I had a very bad headache and was about to throw up so I didnt havethe chance to talk to him so I really regret that. Also I was happy to get my letter form my partner but at the same time, I felt sad because it will be the last letter to recieve from my partner. My partner is good at writing in English and also he is a interesting person in many ways. His letter about life in Cambodia made me very excited everytime and it made me want to go to Cambodia. I feel thankul of him for his entertaining letters and as for my last letter I hope that I can write a interesting letter as he did for me.

In the last class of 2013, I had a great time to enjoy a tasty brownie with Christmas colored candies and to meet Nicole’s NPO partner Shally. During the speed discussion, I talked about Japanese weather with Shally. He looked surprised because we have many types of weather in Japan. Also he told me that he hadn't seen snow before. Therefore, when I saw some pictures of Shally enjoying snow on Nicole's facebook page during the winter vacation, I was happy too. Shally told us real situations in Cambodia. The most impressive thing he said is “Cambodian people may not be rich, but they are always smiling and happy”. I was shocked about myself, because I have a feeling that I had been forgotten the most important thing to live as a human. I think I have to have more honest feeling and thanks for my life. I have conviction that there are a lot of things we should learn from Cambodian people.

As I heard that, I thought it was as to what he was saying. He said that Cambodian people are always smiling. I was very sad with his pointing out. I hope that next time when he visiting Japan, impression such he had this time is not left. I was more interested in Cambodia in last class.
