IE3 Core Spring 2013:  Lesson 9

6/13/2013

Hi everyone,

The rainy season has started, which means we have  a little more than a month left of classes.

Graded Readers (GRs):
For our next writing task, we will be completing a book report.  In order to do this, you’ll need to choose a graded reader. GRs are books written for language learners.  The purpose of these books is to improve your reading fluency.  You need to choose one GR and bring it to class next week.  When you choose your GR, remember these points:
  1. The book is interesting for you.
  2. There are less than five unknown words on each page.  If there are more than five unknown words, you won't be able to improve your reading fluency.

Book Reports:
We also spent some time reviewing the essay questions for your book reports.  Remember that you will have to use the appropriate structure (e.g. listing, compare/contract, hypothetical) depending on the type of question.

When you complete the "literary terms" sections, make sure you give 2-3 specific examples to support your description.

Literary Terms:
We also had a short activity that introduced literary terms.  You will have to analyze each of these terms for your book reports.  In today’s class, we looked at (1) point of view; (2) protagonist; and (3) antagonist.

In next week’s class, we’ll learn about (4) setting; (5) conflict; (6) plot; and (7) theme.

Make sure to bring the Wizard of Oz readings and our Literary Terms booklet.

Discussions:
Great work with your discussions in today’s class.  You’ve all made a lot of improvement in presenting your summaries and opinions.  Everyone is making a big effort to check their group’s understanding.

However, in your summaries, it is ok to have some interaction with your group (e.g. repeat information, ask and answer questions).  For group members, if you need to interrupt the group leader, you can use these expressions:
1.    Can I stop you for a moment?
2.    Can you explain that again?
3.    What was that again?

Homework:
1.     Choose a graded reader (read 15 pages)
2.     Wizard of Oz reading (chapters 3-6)
3.     Journal Topic #6:  scary experience
4.     Discussion preparation
5.     Blog comment #7

Bring your graded to class next week!

Book Report:  due Wednesday, July 3 (in class)

Blog Question #7:

How do you feel after writing your persuasion essay?  What did you enjoy about essay writing?  What difficulties did you have with the essay?

*Write 8-10 sentences.
*Use capitalization, punctuation & spelling correctly.
*Submit by Wednesday, June 18 by 6:00pm.

Revised Discussion Schedule
Please be aware of the changes to our last two weeks of discussion.  On July 3, we will be having two sets of discussions: one group in the first period and another group in the second period.

If you are in the 9:00-10:30am group, makes sure you are not late.  If you are late, you will not be able to do your discussion in the second group.

When I was searching much information about my essay, I enjoyed writing it. Because, I directly feel that my knowledge is increasing. Moreover, through a peer editing, we can understand what should I write my order of sentences. I think essay's difficulties are how to write sentences clearly and correctly. I am filled with sense of accomplishment because writing a persuasion essay was so hard work for me. For example, it was difficult to summarize my idea and make my essay persuasive. My topic is same-sex marriages in Japan and there is little information in Japanese. For that reason, it took me a long time to look for information and quotation which is suited to my essay. The tasks during writing the essay were heavy to cope but I really enjoyed to express my ideas in words and to form as an essay. It was a great experience for me.

There were some difficulties to write a persuation essay. First, it was difficult to collect information especially the opinion which was opposite to my thesis. Then, I needed to construct the information logically. That was also difficult for me. In addition, the peer editing was a hard task. I could not find ten mistakes in my pair's essay easily, so I refered to a dictionary many times. However, I learned many things from writing the essay. Though I had some difficulties because I have never written such a long essay, it was great experience.

Writing a persuasion essay was a good lesson because I could learn about how to write it. I felt writing it was difficult for me. However, when I finished and read it, I became happy because I could write a good essay. I want to thank for my friends and teacher. Although I made many mistakes, they edited them, so my essay was finished to a better thing. On the other hand, I learned that editing other people's sentences is difficult. This time, I choosed "nuclear power" as a topic. Writing a persuasion essay was a good opportunity to reconsider about this topic. Therefore, I had to write it intelligibly and correctly. To think from all such aspect, the study of persuasion essay became a good experience for me.

After writing the persuasion essay, I was proud of myself for completing it for couple of reasons. First, it was the first time for me to write a complete essay in English. I had written paragraphs before, but it was the first time to write such a long piece. Another I was proud was because it was a hard type of writing. It was difficult looking for datas that back up my point of view of the problem.
I enjoyed having my writing revised because it gave me more confidence of my writing. If I did not get it revised every time, I would have been very worried that I was not writing in the way I was supposed to. One thing I had difficulty in was looking up information. Some informations I was looking for was not easy to finding, and it was hard to get the information when writing the reference. Even though this writing activity was very hard, I know it will help me with essays I will write in the future.

Although it was so difficult writing essay in English, I felt happy. Especially, searching the professors' opinions and evidences for supporting my position was difficult. Because my topic was gay marriage, and there was few incidents about that in Japan. In addition, I always confused making structure. I tried to be logical and follow the lecture. The lecture always helped me, so I enjoyed to write through it even writing was difficult. Also, I was so happy that my essay was gradually completing. After I finished, I felt a sense of achievement.

For me, it was not first time to write an essay, but I have many points that I have not known. For example, I learnt how we call the each paragraph and part. And also they have each role for organising an essay. To learn new things is always exciting for me. However, I had to collect some references and professional opinions, that was one of the difficult parts, I think. I should had dicided my toopic easier than mine, but to think it positive, I studied more through the hard topic essay.

For me, writing persuasion essay was so much hard working. I searched about my topic on the Internet and books, but to get information was difficult. Because there has some words I had never heard, so I could not understand easily. Also, the writing style in English is totally different with Japanese style. When I was junior college student, I was writing about my opinion, but that style was free so that was my first time to write an essay in order. However, now I feel like my English skill is getting better in point of writing and reading. I didn't like writing in English, but I could wrote an essay over seven hundred words. So I could got a courage to write an essay. If I have a next time to write an essay, I want to write more better than this time.

After the completion of writing my essay, I felt a sense of achievement. There were several points I enjoyed and thought difficult through writing my essay. For instance, I could clearly write my thought I wanted to emphasize about my topic. In addition, I could get academic skills for writing an essay and knowledge about nuclear power. However, I thought it was difficult for me to search information on the Internet and through reading books and to organize it logically in my essay. I also made a lot of grammatical mistakes in it. It was hard to know how to make clear sentences that gave easy way to understand for readers. Thanks to the advice of teacher and my partner, I could complete my essay and such opportunities of cooperation gave me good English skills. I want to make more efforts with this experience to write a great essay next time.

I felt it was so difficult. Because my theme was “Japan should keep the U.S. bases” and I have not written such a difficult topic essay in English. But I think it was nice time to do because I learnt a lot, for example, bibliography. At first, I didn’t know how to write the bibliography and we have to write “date of month” style. When writing some dates, I often write “month, date” for example, “June 18th” and I didn’t know it is not the official style. Also I thought “easy is not meaning enjoy”. It was really hard and I often got bad score but I always thought how I can have good score. I always thought and thought, and tried hard. At that time, it was so hard and wanted to put away but finally, I changed my mind. I suppose it was nice time to write the essay.
