IE3 Core Spring 2013:  Lesson 4

5/9/2013

Hi everyone,

It was another busy three hours!  Unfortunately, there was still problems with the projector, so I am trying to change our room so that our lesson will go more smoothly next week.

Body Paragraphs:
We learned about the structure of the body paragraphs.  In BP#1 and BP#2, you give your reasons for your position and support your reasons with supporting ideas and details.

There are four types of details you can use in your essay:  (1)  facts; (2) descriptions; (3) statistics; and (4) expert opinions.

Remember that BP#3 is very different from your other body paragraphs.  In BP#3, you need to include counter-arguments and rebuttals.

If you would like to review the slide presentation from our lesson, you can find it at this link:  Persuasion Essay Body Paragraphs

Introductions:  First drafts
I returned the first drafts of your introductions in class.  We went through the different types of comments on your drafts:  blue comments for structure/content and red comments for grammar.  You also received Correction Symbols.  I will use correction symbols to give you hints about the errors you make in your writing.

Outlines:
For next week, you need to complete an outline for your body paragraphs.  Make sure you download the outline template.  You can find it at the end of this summary.

Group Discussions:
Before our discussion, we reviewed Anglo-Saxon Conversational Style.  The handout from our lesson at in a file at the end of this summary.  Remember that you can "jump into" a discussion and that you don't have to wait to give comments.

I was very impressed with your discussions, especially with your conversational style; most members gave their opinions and commented on each other’s opinions.  In addition, you’ve done a good job pre-teaching your vocabulary before the start of your discussion.

For next week's lesson, remember these points to help you improve your discussions:
  1. When you pre-teach your vocabulary, make sure that each group member says the word until she can pronounce fluently.  In order to remember vocabulary, you must SEE, HEAR, and SAY the word.
  2. Don't play with your hair during discussions.  It shows that you aren't interested in the topic, and can be a sign of "flirting" in other cultures.

Homework:
1.  Discussion preparation
2.  Journal Topic #4:  an interesting place
3.  Blog Post #4
4.  Outline:  due May 13 before 12 noon
  • Your outline will be returned by email by 6pm on May 13.  Remember to check your email on Tuesday.
  • Make sure to print out your outline with my comments and bring it to our lesson.

Blog Question #4:

Read through the comments on the first draft of your introduction.  What are three grammar points you need to remember when you write the rest of your essay?

(For students who missed last week's lesson, you will have to submit your blog post after this week's lesson).

* Write 8-10 sentences.
* Use capitalization & spelling correctly.
*  Submit by Tuesday, May 14 by 6:00pm

I made some grammatical mistakes in my introduction.
The mistake that I made a lot were the plural form. I have to pay much attention to it when I make a sentence and it is better for me to review it at least one or two times after I finish writing my essay. Another mistake was the use of prepositions. When I write a sentence,I am sometimes confused which prepositions I have to use. It is difficult for me to use it properly. The third mistake was the word which has some similar expressions. For example,"the possibility of" and "the chance of" are similar but there is a little bit difference between them and I have to distinguish each words in proper situation. I'd like to keep these three grammar points in my mind when I write the rest of my essay.

When I write the rest of my essay, I have to remember next three points. First, I have to pay attention to a tense. I wrote the past tense, but some of them was turned into the present perfect tense. Although this distinction is difficult for me, I will refer to correction and write the rest. Second is exanples. In my introduction, I couldn't give enough examples. To write in easy-to-understand sentenses, it is very important. Third is a preposition because I mistook in several places. It is also difficult, but if I looked at it again, I could prevent some simple mistakes. As stated above, these are my point which I want to remember.

I should be careful about next three grammer points when I write the rest of my essay. First, I am not good at choosing suitable words so I have to consider what word is best in the sentense. Then, I usually make mistakes in verb tense and especially I do not understand how to use present perfect tense well. The third point that I need to remember is plural. I sometimes forget to make a noun plural inadvertently. I am going to pay attention to them.

I have to remember next three points when I write the rest of my essay. First, I have to care about the plural.I made some plural mistakes in my introduction. Next, I have to care about word form. I used some wrong word form, so I have to look over at least twice. Finally, I have to use the simple present. I'm apt to use passive form. Due to this, sentences become complicated. I'll write the rest of my essay remembering these three points.

I need to remember next three things when I write my essay. First, I should keep it in my mind to how to use prepositions. I made many mistakes in choosing a preposition. Second is plural. I prefer to forget to pluralize. Third, I need to be careful to verb tense. I have been not very good at verb tense. These are the points I should take care.

I have to pay attention three things when I write my essay. At first, I always confuse when I choose some words. I can't think about conjunction which is suitable to use when I write my essay. Secondly, I have to learn more about plural. When I read the comments from Nicole, I found many mistakes about plural. Finally, I have to more think about example. I couldn't write some examples so I have to research about my topic. We have to use some examples when especially I write supporting idea. These three things are my points when I write my essay. I wanna practice to write my essay more correctly so I'll do the best.

The things to remember when I write an essay have three points. First of all, I sometimes confused how to express time, especially past sentence. I usually consider that it is past progressive form or past perfect form and so on. Secondly, I confused which preposition should be used. If it is wrong, the whole sentence of meaning might be change. The third thing is essay’s uniformity. After read a lot of people’s opinion or get an information, I cannot think what is my opinion. So sometimes my essay is talking about things irrelevant. So I should pay attention to the uniformity of whole essay. That’s my points that I should be care when I write an essay.

I have to pay attention to three things. First, I should use a pronoun. when I write sentences, I repeated same words. I know that repeating is not good when I use English, but sometimes there are many subject, so I confused. second, it is verb tence. Of course I studied it, but in writing I don't know which verb tences is right. In particular, the past perfect is difficult for me. Third, I should remember to use right plural form. I didn't care about this so much, and it is difficult for me. I'll take care about these three point next time.

I should remember next three points when I write the rest of my essay. First is writing sentence more clearly. Almost each sentence was long and had complex structure because I tried to explain more details with using many words. It was difficult reading. Therefore, second is that I ought to choose the most effective words. The third is that I write formal words. I use "but" but I should write "however" at that time. I remember the three points, and I would like to write excellent essay.

I am in punic on this checked paper that I have given by nicole, because there are too many mistakes to correct. However, I try to think this positively. If I got writing skills that she points out, I will be able to write more understandable essays. I skipped many preposition, made mistakes of ordering the words, for example, the way to write the title. What the biggest problem I think in this essay writing is I haven't got grammar skills properly. I want to practice them and acquire it.

I need to remember these three grammar points when I write the essay.
First, I have to pay attention to the wrong word. I wrote "American bases", but it wasn't correct. I have to write "the US Bases", so next time, I will write the word officially.
Second, I have to care about the capitalization. I wrote "bases" but the correct one was "Bases": the US Bases. I didn't know it shoulder be written in big letter. Maybe, capitalization is the best thing I have to focus on.
Third, I shouldn’t to write the word by omitting. When I wrote the date, I wrote "Apr" for April. But in official, it shouldn't be used abbreviation. I knew that but I didn't think it doesn't be allowed for the report, so it was a nice time to know.

To read my introduction returned, I found error points that I should get over for writing my English essay. In my introduction, I put a definite article to a word that doesn't need it. For example, I wrote “the nuclear power”, but it is incorrect and unnecessary to put “the” to the word. Moreover, I had a few mistake about a verb tense. In the first sentence of my introduction, I wrote “nuclear electric power generation was held” but the correct representation is “has been used” because nuclear power still has been continuing using. I also pay attention to the order of the date. I wrote like “October 26” but the right way to write is”26 October”. I am apt to make some careless mistakes in English sentences, so I will mind about these points and make efforts to write a clear essay.

I made a lot of mistakes so I have to be careful when I write. There are three points to improve. First, I often foget to capitalize the beginning of sentence. I think it is easy to correct if I am conscious of capitalization while writing. Second, I spelled wrongly such as marijuhana. I feel I should practice spelling correctly several times. Third, I used 1st person and 2st person. It is not accademic and can't use it. I pay attention to indication and want to write good essay.
