Hi Nicole,

1. I think Academic Writing differ from IE3 Writing in many aspects. First, writing tasks were different. I didn't write research paper in IE3 Writing class. Also, I didn't learn specific things about writing styles or skills. For example, how to search sources, in-text citation, paraphrasing, or summarizing. Everything I learned in this class seemed first for me. Moreover, I didn't wrote my writing tasks step-by-step in IE3 class. So sometimes I felt it difficult to complete some tasks at once. Second, I didn't receive feedbacks from the teacher in IE3 class. Of course, I submitted writing tasks to the teacher many times during the semester. But I didn't receive any feedbacks about those writing tasks. So I couldn't check or correct my writing tasks after I handed in those things. Thus, I'm so glad to receive many feedbacks about my research paper in Academic writing class. Therefore, there are many different things between Academic Writing and IE3 Writing. I think Academic Writing is much higher level than IE3 Writing.

2. I think I will be able to use many skills from Academic skills in many other courses. For example, in IE Seminar class, other seminar class, or many classes using English. So I think I should use many skills I learned from this course when taking such classes. I think I can use the skills when I writing a research paper like in this course. But there will be more ways to use the skills. First, the skills can be used when I write the reflections about the content of the novel or many other things. I can use the skills like body paragraph structure, in-text citations and so on. Also, I think I can use such skills when I writing a short or long essay. I guess that essay is more formal type of writing than reflection. So I think I will be able to use every skills I learned in Academic Writing class. The skills can be used in every parts and steps of the writing. If I don't have any skills from this course, my writing tasks in the future will become very difficult. It is very scary thing even I just imagine about it. So I was pleased to having a chance to learn many skills during this course. I'll use all of those skills in many aspects of other classes.

3. First of all, I was so relieved to finish my writing. At the very first day of the class, I didn't think that I could finish my writing. The sample of the research paper seemed very long and technically. I hadn't written such a long length and specific essay. So I became so anxious about writing a research paper. For me, each tasks were very difficult. But at the same time, I felt that I could gain new writing skills and improve my research paper. These kind of thoughts connected to confidence little by little. There were many difficult things during I was writing my research paper. Sometimes I felt that I wouldn't be able to finish my writing. But every times I thought such things, I tried to shake such idea and focused on my writing. So I felt fulfilled when I finished my writing. Writing a research paper was difficult and hard task for me. But I think it was productive and meaningful for my English skills. I'll make use of what I learned in this course in other classes.

Thanks,
Mayu

Hi Nicole,

1.
I think there are many different things between IE3 Writing and Academic Writing. First of all, I didn't write my research paper step-by-step in IE3 Writing. I wrote it all at once, so it was very hard for me. I prefer step-by-step writing rather than writing all at once.
Secondly, a teacher of IE3 didn't check my paper each paragraph, so I had some doubts whether my sentences, grammer, structure and so on are correct expressions? However, Nicole revised my essay carefully, so It was very helpful and good advices. Finally, I could understand how to write bibliography and intext-citations well. I had learned bibligraphy in IE3 class, but I could not understand well. So, I didn't have confidence for them. However, Nicole prepared for many papers about them. It made me easier to understand them.

2.
I think I can use the skills which I learned in Academic Writing for other English essays. How to use datebase will be useful for searching materials on computer. How to compose structure of a essay will be useful when I will decide contents of essay. The most useful thing of them is paraphrasing. I will use many books and electronic sources when I write more research paper in the future. It will be helpful to be short author's opinions without changing meanings.

3.
I feel a sense of fulfillment. I think step-by-step writing is a good way to write long essay and Nicole and my partner's comments were really cheerful for me. Through this cource, I can get confidence for me.

Thanks,
Saeko

Hello, Nicole

Q1. I think AW is more formal than IE3 Writing. Since I changed the department this year, I have to take AW and IE3 class at the same time in the second semester. So I can obviously compare how different they are. My IE Writing teacher is a bit permissive parenting and my draft is not corrected in details: there is almost nothing about the feedback. Fortunately I can learn how to write research paper in AW class ahead of time, I feel IE Writing tasks are fairly easy. In AW, we need to read several references and quote some. The length of the essay is also different: we have to write two or three times longer in AW.

Q2. There are lots of skills we can use in other courses. However, for me, critical thinking is the most important. I had believed almost everything in the newspaper or books before. Throughout the learning, I realize some of those are very biased or strained logic. I become prudent and consider if the information is actually the fact.

Q3. When I finished my essay, I felt a sense of achievement and relieved. AW’s research essay was one of my biggest assignments therefore I was stressed out when another homework deadline clashed with AW’s. Our faculty has relatively lots of things to do. Now I feel refreshed and I am happy to be able to concentrate on other homework.

Thanks,
Natsumi

1. In IE3 Writing, I didn't feel like I was being taught about writing in an academic way. Feedback had only the good parts of my work and I didn't get revised. I know that I'm not an expert in English, so that was very confusing. From those differences, I felt that I was really "learning" in my Academic Writing class. It was sometimes difficult to write it, but it was also very interesting to write it step by step and getting the grammars and punctuation corrected. I like the Academic Writing class much more than the IE3 Writing class.

2. I think I can use my developed summarizing, paraphrasing and critical thinking skills when I want to organize my presentation. Not only for the ones in English, but also for the Japanese ones. I also think that the basic structure of the research paper might help me in all courses I will take. It can make me tell my ideas and feelings to others. That would be helpful when I'm working with other people. Not only from the same culture, but also from the different culture. I feel that writing critically will lead to talking clitically, too.

3. I'm happy that I have finally finished my research paper! I can't believe I wrote such a long paper. Reading it through makes me smile with joy that I have accomplished a great work.

Hi Nicole,

1. I think there are many differences. First of all, in my IE3 writing class, I did not get a feedback from the teacher. So, I could not know how well I wrote it. Teacher made us write a short essay about once a week, so in the class, we get time to write our essays on the computer. My teacher did not tell us about the structure, so we did not write our essays in the correct form. So, many things I learned in the Academic writing were new to me. For example, essay structure, in-text citation, how to summarize, bibliography, paraphrasing, and so on. I really felt that Academic writing is more difficult, but I am happy because I was able to learn correct styles to write a research paper.

2. I think I can use these skills which we learned in Academic writing in many other courses. I personally think that we can use this skill not only in English but also in Japanese. Since I entered university, I had many opportunities to write essays, but since I did not know the structure of the essay, I had written it in my own way. So, I think my paper was not so organized and hard to read for others. But, since I learned about in-text citation, summarizing, critical thinking and so on, I think I became a better writer than before. At the end of the semester, I have to write many essays for many courses, so I think I can use these skills to write them and get a better grade. Also, when I read other people’s research paper, I think I can understand the contents more because I know the structure now.

3. After writing a research paper, I really feel confident and relived. At the beginning of this semester, I was very nervous because it was my first time to write a long research paper in the specific structure. So, at first I felt like I can not finish my research paper, but now since I finished it, I want to praise myself. Also, I really want to say thank you to many people who gave me advice to write and finish my paper.

Thanks,
Kana

Hi Nicole.
Q1
This course was very different from IE writing. First of all, the number of words required in my research paper was different. In this course, I had to write around 1500 words. On the other hand, in IE writing, I needed to write about only 800 words. Therefore, I felt tired everytime when I submitted my homework. In addition, I had to cite more sources than IE writing. I had difficulty in looking for the sources I quoted on my research paper. As for teaching styles, you started making us write our essay in early step, so I could finish my work very early than I had expected.

Q2
I use the way to write in-text citation which you taught me in many classes such as debating one. I had to look for evidences, so I also wrote them in in-text citation style.

Q3
I was really relieved after finishing all of my homework. I could learn a lot of things about the way to complete research paper. I will use the technique when I go to an American university.

Thanks.

Hello, Nicole.

1. I think Academic Writing differ widely from IE 3. For example, in my IE 3 class, there was no feedback from my teacher. In addition, he explained how to summarize or paraphrase mostly, so I didn't understand how to cite or write bibliography. I think he conducted classes very eagerly, but it was very hard for me to write paper all at one time at time, because I often forgot what he said in class and I couldn't reflect it in my research paper. On the other hands, in AW class, there were a lot of helpful lessons materials such as lesson summary, guidelines or personal advices. Moreover, unlike IE 3, I didn't have to write all paper at the end of a semester. Of course, writing research paper every week was not easy. However, thanks to the style, I had enough time to think of a contents carefully. I think considering the research paper’s structure in AW lessons was harder than in IE 3 because I had to use many in-text citations in it. However, I also feel that, because of your supports, it was more easy to write the research paper than the paper in IE 3.

2. I would like to use all the skills from Academic Writing in other courses. After AW, I don't know wether I will have chances to write research paper in English. However, I think what I learned in AW class will very useful in various situations. Although I have studied how to write papers, I haven't known the APA style or the way of intent citations. Moreover, I haven't prepared an outline, so my research papers were always not organized at all. So, next time when I have to write research paper in English, I can write correct and organized one. In addition, I think there are some parts which I can use when I write papers in Japanese like summarizing, paraphrasing or critical thinking. It is also important to use words such as hook, final thought or synonymous in order to attract readers’ attentions and make research paper simple. Considering them, the skills are very helpful. So as not to forget the skills, I would like to keep a file with all lesson materials after AW lessons.

3. I'm filled with a feeling of accomplishment now. Before writing research paper, I was very anxious about the task because I didn't have confidence in my writing ability at all and I thought it would be very hard for me to balance writing research paper with other classes’ tasks. In fact, it was very difficult for me to finish my research paper. However, contrary to the previous lessons, I could make use of what you taught in my paper immediately. In addition, I also could get very useful advices and learn that what I should do improve my research paper before I forgot. The teaching style helped me learn writing skills and write more organized research paper. I have bothered about that my research paper laced coherence and I couldn't write effective paper, however, through AW lessons, I feel that I could write he best paper to date. So I'm happy to finish my research paper on time and to write comparatively reader-friendly paper.

Thanks,
Yoko

Hi Nicole

1, I think they are very different in many ways. In IE3 class, I've done my paper with more course step-by-step. So I didn't know even the introduction can be decided into more detailed part like hook and main idea. I just thought that introduction must attract people's attentions. Also, peer editiong in IE3 was just to read and fill the check list, so actually I didn't have confident in my editing. I feel sorry for my friends about that now. Most biggest difference for me was words count. Like I posted past, I've never wrritten such a long paper till AW. So in this time I used my dictionary many times, and got some new words.

2, I can not find what else courses need the skill I got in academic writing, but now I'm more confident than ever in putting my ideas together. So when I convey my opinions to others, or maybe in debating, it can be useful I guess. Moreover when having presentation, I can make my plan easier and in right order and show audiences my ideas clearly. Thus the skill you taught us in AW can use in any courses and in any cases. In addition after my graduation, I think I would use the skill without noticing.

3, I'm really relaxed now. Actually I can't find the exact expressions or words that show my feeling. I feel how fast the half semester passed. I want to get back to our first class and tell me in past that the time had passed surprisingly quickly. More importantly, I really appreciate for your kindest help. Like I wrote in answer-1, it was completely different from IE3, and I was at lost in the first class. However you taught us step by step in every class, and prints you gave were useful and helpful. Thank you so much! I can't believe this is my last blog post.

Thanks.
Kanako

First of all, I am very happy to see you at my academic writing class. Because my IE3 writing teacher had no advice and said think all yourself. However, you gave a lot of advice for my each paper. So, I could do my task smoothly with fun. Of course, there were many difficulties in my paper but because of this experience I feel strong confidence in my writing. If the opportunity to write some writing materials, I will take every skills that I was taught from you in the Academic Writing class. This research paper was the most longest work than I wrote ever. Therefore I feel great achievement. The most difficult thing thing for me was final thought. Because you said many times that final thought should have strong impression to attract reader. I couldn't hit upon good final thought easily. If there were not teacher's advice, I couldn't finish. But,surely, the writing class will be gone. And I will have less time of writing. However I will try to do writing training any more.

Thanks,

Hi Nicole,
I am so sorry for the late posting.

Q1. For one thing, Academic writing requires me more precious data or information; for another thing, it needs to be persuasive because we have to explain and explain our thought through the essay.

Q2. In other classes, I learn quite basic writing rules like bibliography , paragraph structures and things like that. However, they were not as specific as things that I have studied in this lecture. Therefore, the experience of this class really helped me improve my writing skills which had long been one of my great weakness in English.

Q3. It was a quite useful task for me to learn about how to organize my opinions on difficult matters. In addition, I could also realize It is important to check whether the information we rely on is right or not before we use them as our source.

Thank you.

Hi, Nicole,
I post my comment too late, very sorry about it.

1. AW was totally different from IE3 Writing. About all of part, you did very well. Nicole's feedback was so constructive and useful for my paper. IE3 teacher gave feedback to us but it was too short. Moreover, you explained very deeply when you gave me feedback. Therefore yourfeedback was really persuasive. The best of AW was writing style. Step by step was hard but really good for us. When I was in IE3, I didn 't take care well about my paper until the class nealry finished. On the other hand, in this AW class, I wrote my paper part deliberately. This was the biggest different.

2. I can use the structure in other courses' reports. The structure which we learned in AW is very logical and easy to understand. This is not just English writing but also Japanese writing; it is important for Japanese writing too to write with logical sentence. And I learned how to use intext citation. There might be some difference between how to use quotes in your paper in English and Japanese reports, however, the basis is same.

3. I feel a sense of achievement.very much. My IE 3 writing class was not so strict that, as I mentioned in 2, AW was harder for me. However, I could write my paper carefully and concientiously. I feel strongly that writing step by step is the best and perfect way to write a long paper. Icannot believe that I finished writing my paper before winter vacation. I'm proud of being a member of Nicole's class. You were very kind and your advice was really heplfull. Thanks for your kindness and wonderful time schedule.
