Academic Writing: Lesson 10

11/19/2015

Hi everyone,

We'll now be spending the last part of our course revising and editing our research papers. This part will be much easier for most of you.

Revising and Editing:
In today's class, we learned about revising and editing.  When you revise, you correct the content and structure of your research paper.  When you edit, you correct grammar and style mistakes.

You then have some time to work on your peer editing task.  For this task, you will revise/edit your partner's concluding paragraph.  You need to complete the following for this task:
  1. complete the Peer Editing Worksheet
  2. make revision corrections (using blue pen) on your partner's paragraph
  3. make editing corrections (using red pen) on your partner's paragraph
  4. make a copy of the worksheet and your partner's concluding paragraph (with your corrections)

In next week's class, you will give the original copies to your partner, and the copies to me.  The worksheet is attached at the end of today's blog summary.

Conferences:
For the last part of our lesson, you work on your peer editing activities and I had conferences with the first group of students. We will continue our conferences in next week's lesson in Room 217.

Homework:
  1. Peer Editing Task (=10%)
  2. Blog Comment #8
  3. Complete Conference Preparation Worksheet (conference group 1)

Blog Question #8
  1. How did you find the peer editing task?
  2. How long did it take to revise and edit your partner's conclusion?

  • Write 10-12 sentences.
  • Use capitalization, punctuation & spelling correctly.
  • Submit by Wednesday, Nov. 25 by 6:00pm

1.
I compared to thesis statement in introduction and thesis restatement in conclusion. In body paragraph summaries, I read each paragraph and compared concluding sentences in each paragraph and body paragraph summaries in conclusion.I could write revision comments immediately, but it was difficult to find grammer mistakes. I read sentences in conclusion many times and checked words by using dictionaries. Although I wrote my comments and alternative words, I didn't have confidence whether is it right. However, I will be pleased that it will help my partner's essay better.

2.
It took about two hours to revise and edit my partner's conclusion. My partner's theme was British literature. It was a little difficult theme for me. However, from my partner's mistakes, I could learn correct usage of words and importance of run-on-sentences.

Hi Nicole,

1. Before I started peer editing task, I read through my partner's research paper. This was because I'd like to understand the content of the partner's essay and do the task more efficiently. In fact, it brought a good result. I could check each points on the checklist effectively like with or without of concluding transition, thesis restatement, summary of each paragraphs, final thought. So I relieved a little. But I felt it difficult to make revision comments and grammar corrections. It took a long time to do them. Also, I had to read my partner's conclusion paragraph again and again. To be honest, I don't have much confidence about this task. But I hope my corrections and comments will have a good effect on my partner's research paper.

2. It took about one to two hours to revise and edit my partner's conclusion. It took shorter hours which I had expected before I started this task. I had thought that it would take more than two hours. By doing this task, I learned that revising and correcting grammar mistakes were more difficult things to do than I had thought. Also, I could learn some grammatical things and what to revise which I think I will be able to utilize in my research paper. So I think this task is hard but meaningful for partner's and also my writing.

Thanks,
Mayu

Hi Nicole,

1. It was my first time to do this kind of peer editing, so it was a challenge for me. Before I start editing, I did not know what my partner wrote about, so in class I asked my partner and got an image of it. Then, to get more clear idea, I read through my partner’s paper. The content was very interesting, so I enjoyed reading it. Also, since you made us a checklist, it was much easier to do my task then I had expected. But, it was hard for me to find little mistakes such as grammars and spelling mistakes so I had to read many times. My partner had many run-on sentences, so I found it difficult to rewrite those sentences, but at last, I felt very satisfied.

2. It took about 2 and half hours to edit and revise it. First of all, I am not good at grammar so it was hard for me to find grammar mistakes. Then as I said before, my partner had run-on sentences so it took me a lot of time to revise it. I had to read many times and make sure if it make sense, so I had spent a lot of time for that. By doing this I learned how to edit and revise, so I think I can use this skill in my research paper too.

Thanks,
Kana

1. It was very hard for me to peer edit my partner's research paper. The first time I read her paper, I couldn't find a single mistake on it except for the easy spelling mistake she had. I was also very unsure of my skills to revise someone's sentence. I learned that I have to have confidence when I revise people's paper. I looked through my papers I got in class for a lot of times.

2. It took almost 2 days for me. First I found that I can't find any problems on my partner's paper. Next day, I read it through again. Then I finally found some sentences to be revised. It was a long path for me. Although I'm glad I could help my partner's research paper to be better.

1. Obviously, it was a hard work for me because my English is not perfect. I don't have any confidence about my English grammar. So editing and revising my friend's paper was difficult. But I could get some hints from friend's paper. There are many expressions which I didn't use in my paper. Therefore, we can improve our English skills and vocabularies through peer editing.

2. It took about 4 hours. My reading speed is very slow. Moreover, trying to find some mistakes in friend's paper is difficult because she made few mistakes. But through peer editing, I can learn how to edit and revise the paper. So I'll do same things in my paper.

1. I found that the peer editing task was difficult. Although I don't have enough skill to correct others’ mistakes, it seemed that there were not much grammar mistakes in my partner’s conclusion. In addition, she wrote her research paper simply and clearly. So I had difficulty finding parts which should be revised. Moreover, it was very hard for me to make comments because there were some parts which I couldn't judge whether I should edit. However, through the peer editing task, I learned not only mistakes which others tend to make but also good points like expressions. I think it will useful to write papers next time.

2. It took about two hours to revise and edit it. It was not so difficult to read my partner’s paper and check the yes or no questions. However, I spent a lot of time thinking my comments. I learned that how hard the peer editing was from the task.

1. Although I have read classmates' essay, I've never had peer editing task before. First, I read well all my partner's research paper, and knew her topic. After, I started to revise her structure. To do this, I read each body paragraphs a few times. Also I edited conclusion, and thought my comments for her paper. It was hard to think good comment, and I think I have many mistakes in my peer editing task. However, I learned new phrases and words I didn't know from my partner's research paper.

2. It took three hours to revise and edit my partner's conclusion. Because I didn't frequent with her topic, it took long to read whole paper. At first, I couldn't find grammar errors and the other problems. Even I found what I thought that I should correct, I didn't have confidence if it is exact or not. Therefore, I took plenty of time.

1. Because I did not peer editing task in IE1 to 3, I did not know how to do and what should I do to edit and revise my pertner's paper. So, I think if I took mistake, I will try my best as much as I can. Firstly I read through the paper to understand contents but I did not correct. Second, I read the paper again and if I found mistake, I underlined it by pencil because this check may be wrong. Next, I read conclusion and compared each part in order introduction to BP3 again and again. Finally I corrected underlined part with proper color pen. This task was difficult but good experience for me. Through this task, I think I could learn some technique to write essay.

2. I took 1day for peer editing task. This task was really diffcult for me. My grammar and writing skill is not perfect, so when I first read pertner's paper, I thought there is no mistake if some part was wrong. Furthermore, I think my pertner did not take so much mistake.

1.
It was difficult. It is actually esaier that rivising my own essay though. My partner's essay was pretty close to perfect. Thus, it was harder than I expected.

2.
It took a lot of time. I needed to read through the essay several times. First, I read it to get the idea. Then, I read it again to make corrections. I read it one more time to make sure. Also, conclusion isone of the most important parts in the essay, so I felt some pressure, too.

1 I found it very difficult to edit other people's writings. I think this is because what I thought about the writings could be the right thing for the writers. Only the grammer cheking is much more easy― only to find what is right or what is wrong. However, another type of editing is just a sort of feelings. Even I have manuals of editing, it is difficult for me to fix the writings correctly.

2. It took about 2 hours. It is very difficult to show what is right or what is wrong. I thought that this task is little hard because I have some difficulties correcting writings.

Hi, Nicole.

Q1
How did you find the peer editing task?

First of all, I checked a mistake in terms of a grammar. Then, I checked a construction. I checked a length of each BP's explanation, and whether there is a concluding transition, and so on. I did that task by reminding the class. For example, when I saw the example in a concluding paragraph, I remembered you said it is not good to use an example in BP’s summary.
For checking what should be written in thesis statement, I checked a thesis statement in a introduction. For checking what is written in BP’s summary, I checked a topic sentence, and concluding sentence of each body paragraph.

Q2
How long did it take to revise and edit your partner's conclusion?

My partner wrote a good concluding sentence, so it didn’t take so much. It was about an hour. She did a good job, so the most difficult task was finding a improving point. It was a first time to read other's paper in this class, so it was a good experience. I thought I have to improve more and more.

Thanks,
Nagisa

1. Editing others essay was quite hard task, and I found it quite difficult to correct the errors because I was not sure whether those errors were really wrong or not. Through this practice, I could realize how hard it is to detect wrong words and grammar. In addition, commenting something on the essay was also complicated task. All in all, it was really tough but useful study.

2. It took me 3-4 hours. This was because I needed to learn how to edit essays and practice it beforehand. However, I could not edit the partner's essay at all. It was really difficult.

Hello, Nicole

I am sorry for late for posting.

1.It was so interesting for me to check my partner’s essay. To read another’s taught me that there were lots of ways to write my thesis. While I wrote my essay, I could only use some types of phrases repeatedly and I cared it. However, I found nice choice of words from peer task and I thought I wanted to use them next time. After I read throughout, I started to revise the conclusion and find grammatical mistakes. For me, it was difficult to make 12 corrections. I realized I had written English text in somewhat vague way and my knowledge of grammar was not enough. So I thought I needed to read more research paper in English and studied the grammatical construction.

2.It took me around 3 hours. At first I cannot find obvious mistakes in my partner’s essay. Then I used my dictionary and searched the functions of each verb or auxiliary. It was rather detailed work but I could make sure that how one word had various meanings and functions. I felt peer editing task was very good to know about my English writing skill.

Thanks,
Natsumi

Hi Nicole. I'm really sorry for posting late.

1, it was fresh for me because I've never edited friends' writing, nor had them to edit mine. In addition I thought that editing and revising are teacher's task, so peer editing was little bit difficult. I didn't have ideas about what is wrong or right with research paper. However after I did peer editing, I could find easier that my paper had many mistakes than ever. This time by standing teacher's point of view, I realized that there are several points that I can't find by keeping to write or sticking on my own paper.

2, I didn't remember how much time it took since I repeated a couple of times, but it seems that peer editing would take 2 or 3 hours at least. To edit correctly, we have to know about partners' topic in detail. But their themes are academic as much as our owns, so we rarely see what partners want to say at first reading. We also should keep thinking about what advises would improve. These things are really difficult and take much time.

Sorry for late because I forgot this task.

1. First, I started to find partner's mistakes with red pen. I thought that I could revise paper faster. After correcting grammar mistakes, I began to revise the each sentences. This task was little hard for me because I had to read whole sentences of my partner's research paper. Maybe, my partner thought that I finished my concluding paragraph with no error and it was perfect!! However, I found some mistakes in it. Therefore, I realized that it is necessary to show the paper to other person I think.
2. I spent a lot of my time to revive my partner's revising thorough three days. Because I thought that only single day, I couldn't find all mistakes. Therefore I saw my partner's paper many times in different places.
