AW Fall 2013:  Lesson 10

11/30/2013

Hi everyone,

I can't believe it's almost December! Just three more weeks before the holiday break!

Revising and Editing:
In today's class, we learned about revising and editing.  When you revise, you correct the content and structure of your research paper.  When you edit, you correct grammar and style mistakes.

You then have some time to work on your peer editing task.  For this task, you will revise/edit your partner's concluding paragraph.  You need to complete the following for this task:
  1. complete the Peer Editing Worksheet
  2. make revision corrections (using blue pen) on your partner's paragraph
  3. make editing corrections (using red pen) on your partner's paragraph
  4. make a copy of the worksheet and your partner's concluding paragraph (with your corrections)

In next week's class, you will give the original copies to your partner, and the copies to me.  The worksheet is attached at the end of today's blog summary.

Conferences:
For our lesson on December 5 and 12, we will be having conferences.  You will be able to discuss your first drafts with me in an individual meeting during class while other students revise/edit their drafts.  Make sure you prepare your list of questions for me before our conferences.

I've attached our conference schedule and explanation about it at the end of today's blog summary.

Computer Room:
For our conferences, we'll be in the computer room in Building 2 / Rm. 218.  The room is a little difficult to find.  When you enter building, turn left and go down the hall.  At the end of the hall, turn left.  The computer room is the last classroom on the left (across from the washrooms).

Homework:
1.  Peer Editing Task (=10%)
2.  Blog Comment #9
3.  Bring to class next week:

  • your peer editing task (and a copy for me)
  • a copy of all your drafts (the ones with my comments on them)
  • your Aogaku ID card (to use the computers)
  • a USB with your research paper file on it (to revise/edit in the computer room)

Blog Question #8:
  1. How did you find the peer editing task?
  2. How long did it take to revise and edit your partner's conclusion?
  • Write 10-12 sentences.
  • Use capitalization, punctuation & spelling correctly.
  • Submit by Wednesday, December 4 by 6:00pm

First of all, I found out that I was not sure about my grammar as I edited my partner’s research paper. “Article” is one of the most difficult things about English for me. I don’t know when and where to put “the” and “a.” Also putting plural is hard for me. I cannot find it in the dictionary so what I edited was not surely correct. Revising is even harder. I am not sure my correction is appropriate. Help me! It takes me 2 hours so far. I think it takes another hour to complete it. Doing 20 more times this every week would make me crazy. Nicole, you are so tough…

I found it very good to do peer editing task. There are some reasons for it. At first, my partner will notice some mistakes that Nicole and I didn’t find while making my RP. Also, I can find a lot of things by different points of view. That’s why I think doing peer editing task for my partner will lead to giving other new ideas for his/her RP. Secondly, I can get much knowledge about something interesting by reading his/her RP. RP is like the English report that we have to do in other classes, so I can get a lot of information about it.
It took me about 1 hour to revise and edit my partner’s conclusion. Though it was easy to read through it, I re-read all the BP again and again for checking the organizing. My partner used same words and sentences in his conclusion, so it was a bit hard for me to look for synonyms for some words using dictionary frequently.

Since my partner's research paper was easy to understand, I could read my partner's conclusion smoothly. However, I found, to do peer editing task was more difficult than to read. I read the research paper again and again so I could find some irrelevant sentences. However, I was not able to readily find grammar mistakes. At glance, it looked all correct so I thought to find out grammar mistakes was the most difficult. Although I learned that revising and editing took a lot of times (I took about two hours.) and it improved my English ability certainly, I do not want to do this every week. Therefore, I am full of gratitude to Nicole. Thank you so much.

I found it very difficult to edit and revise partner's research paper and I also found that I was not sure of my grammar. Editing and revising partner's research paper clearly brought out that how my writing skill is immature. When I did that, I found some mistakes of using comma, but I did not know how to correct them. I thought my writing skill became a little better after writing my research paper but its my misunderstanding. I have to make an more effort to make it better. I think peer editing is good way to find out and know our weak points of writing skill.
It took over one and half hour to edit and revise partner's research paper. After doing that, I felt very tired, so I thought you are so tough because you do the same work for over 10 people. I respect you so much.
By the way, your Christmas Tree is so beautiful!! I want Christmas Tree like yours, but I do not have enough space to put it, so I envious of you.

I was absent from last week's class, so I didn't do the peer editting task. Therefore, I am gonig to write about the my thought of peer editing task. Editing task is good for us to learn academic writing. To edit research paper, I may need the grammar skill to find and revice mistakes. Therefore, through do this task, I may be able to learn much more grammer than now. Moreover, partner may find the mistakes which I can't notice. So, it is also good for our research paper to making better and better. However, I think this task is difficult. I must read again and again, and find mistakes or give some advices. To edit partner's research paper, I think it will take me about one hours.

I found it very useful to do peer editing task. Partner find mistakes which I couldn't realize while writing. And, I could find my mistakes or miunderstandings through checking my partner's paper. But, at the same time, I also think that it's difficult because my partner's level of English is almost same as me. If I edit paper written in easy English, it's really easy for me. But each partner's grammer, word, sentence and sentence structure level is very similar. If we miss partner's mistakes, it's really important to try our best. Furthermore, I could realize how hard you work for us. I'm impressed to think that you've done this task every week. I appreciate you very much!
About an hour took me revise and edit my partner's conclusion.

I think that peer editing is very difficult. It is because my partner's research paper is very good so I could not find the point that I have to edit or revise at first. I was confused by noun because which is singular or plural number noun better? Also my partner's research paper is very organized. Accordingly, it is easy to understand but it is difficult to edit it. Althogh it is difficult, by doing peer editing, I can learn many things, for example, words and idioms. When I checked my partner's research paper, I focus on taking care of grammar, but I am not sure that what I edited are correct.
It takes me about one hour and a half. After finishing, I think it is very hard task but I could realize that I have to check and edit my research paper more. Editing research paper every week is really hard so I really appreciate Nicole.

I found it very difficult to revise and edit other's paper. That's because I have to read whole paper to do, and I don't feel confident enough to see other's. Howevere, that was very valuable for me because I could know some mistakes that students tend to make. At the same time, I felt worry that I might make that kind of mistake I found in my partner's paper. From the next time, I think I can pay more attention to my paper thanks to this peer editing task.
It took me about one hour to do this task. I had to compare the conclution with body paragraph, and check the list of this task. I thought it might take much time if I didn't know about the partner's topic at all.

I realized that it was more difficult to edit than to write for some reasons. Firstly, when I am writing, all I should do is to write and express what I mean, but when editing, I should not only understand what partner's paper says but also look for mistakes in the paper. It was difficult for me. Second, I found I had no confident about grammar because while reading a paper for editing every single word, tense, voice seems to be wrong. But gradually I could correct wrong grammar. Third, to edit contents is harder than to correct grammar because it was not as clear as grammatical mistakes. But thanks to your taughts, I managed to do.
This week I realized how you have hard works every time again. It took one and half hour to edit. You are native english speaker, but still you are so busy, I think. I want to thank you so much.

My partner's research paper is easy to understand and I think his research paper is almost perfect, so it is very difficult to find mistakes. I don't have confidence in my grammar, so if I find some mistakes, I don't know whether it is correct or not. It takes me long time to correct my partner's paper. I read it repeatedly, and I learned good expressions and clever phrase from my partner's paper, so this was good opportunity for me.

My partner's research paper is so interesting and clear, so I could read it easily. However, it is difficult for me to find partner’s mistake. The mistakes about grammar are easier than about constructions. Moreover, I should edit just his conclusion, but I had to read all to understand his conclusion. Therefore, I took about 1 hour to edit his research paper. I do understood that editing work is so hard and needs concentration.

I found peer editing is very instructive because I can review my research paper from different point of view.
My partner will give me some advice that might be different from Nicole' s ones, so it widens my vision. It was difficult for me to check grammatical errors and organization of context because I have little knowledge to these, but I'm sure using dictionary to search synonyms, reading my partner's research paper over and over again and thinking to make it better were good lessons to me. It took about 2 hours to check my partner's research paper , and now I know Nicole is doing hard works every week. Thank you.

I found it very difficult to revise and edit my partner's paper. Finding grammar mistakes were easy than I had expected. On the other hand, it was hard to find content and structure mistakes. I had to find some mistakes besides understanding what my partner want to state in the paper. However, I think peer editing task doesn't have only difficult points but also good points. First one is my partner find mistakes that I didn't notice. Second one is through this task, I was able to get new knowlegde. Foe example, I could learn new words.
It took 1 hours and half to check my partner's paper. Her topic was completly fifferent from my topic, so it was hard to read. I read again and again to understand the content and find mistakes.

I think that peer editing is so difficult. This is because I don't have confidence to use correct grammar. My partner's research paper is easy to
understand. However,I couldn't find mistake on partner research paper well when I read partner's research paper for the first time. I could edit by looking teacher's advice on my draft over again. Certainly this task is so difficult, but I can look my research paper from another view points because of this task. By looking from another view points, I can deepen research paper. This is so worthy task. Moreover, I think again that teacher's work is tough. We should appreciate teacher's work. It took about 2 hours to check partner's research paper.

Revising my conclusion, I found many mistakes. Since I was absent, I searched my own mistakes. Although I found many parts to correct, I am not sure I was able to find all of them. Also, I am poor with grammer, so there must be few that can be written in more correct words that matches the sentence. Using dicitonary was very helpful.
I now realize how impoirtant it is to have someone else check the papers. Since, we write it on our own, it is very difficult to find the mistakes because what we wrote is thought correct. The task alone took only about 1 hour since it was my own paper but it must take more time to correct someone else's. We must carefully look over our works.
