Hi everyone,
It was really great to meet everyone today. We're going to have a busy semester, so make sure you keep up with our weekly readings. Syllabus & Schedule For the first part of our lesson, we went through our course syllabus and schedule. If you missed a class, you can refer to our schedule to see what you missed and what you have to prepare for the next lesson. Our syllabus and schedule are in the World Englishes Course Information section. What is World Englishes? We then completed a group discussion on your own impressions of World Englishes. On the last day of class, you'll receive your worksheet again to compare how your ideas about World Englishes has changed during our course. Circle of Englishes We then looked at McArthur's Circle of World Englishes. This diagram shows the division of standard and standardising Englishes in the world. Identifying World Englishes As our last activity, we had a listening activity. You had to try to identify 10 different types of Englishes spoken. As you can see, each English has its own pronunciation, grammar, and cultural conventions. The materials from today's lesson can be found in the World Englishes Lesson Materials section. Homework:
