OE2 Spring 2013:  Lesson 8

6/7/2013

Hi everyone!

I hope you're enjoying the weather this week.  It's beautiful.  I hope the rain stays away for a while!

Group Presentations:
For most of today's lesson, we went through the guidelines for your group presentations.  You were assigned a group and chose your presentation topic.

We then completed activities about how to organization your presentation (structure and expressions) and how to prepare your outline

You won't have a lot of time in class to prepare for your presentations, so make sure you arrange time with your group outside of class to plan and prepare your presentation.

Discussions:
Since we spent most our our lesson on learning how to organize our presentations, we only have enough time for one round of discussions.  However, I'm quite impressed with how much everyone has improved this semester, especially with conversational style.  Keep up the good work!

For next week's discussions, remember these points:
  1. Show interest when you are listening to others.  This lets the speaker know that you are interested in his/her comments (e.g. I see. / Yeah. / Uh-huh.)
  2. No Japanese.  There are a few groups that are slipping in Japanese during discussions.  If you need to use Japanese for a vocabulary term, that is ok.  However, there should be NO long explanations in Japanese.  Please be aware that using Japanese (by the group leader or members) will result in a lower score for the group leader's discussion.

Homework:
  1. Blog comment #8
  2. Discussion preparation
  3. Presentation Research
  4. Start preparing presentation outline
  • due June 19 before 12noon by email
  • ntakeda.aogaku@yahoo.com

Blog Question #8:

What is your presentation topic?  Why did you choose this person?

*Write 8-10 sentences.
*Use capitalization, punctuation & spelling correctly.
*Submit by Wednesday, June 12 by 6:00pm.

Our presentation topic is about Aung San Suu Kyi. She is popular for a leader of non-violent democratization in Myanmar. She is a aso a polotician now and elected to "Chairperson of National League for Democracy central executive committee". We thought she is very inspired person, because she kept fightng for freedom for people in Myanmar even if she was imprisoned for several times. Thanks to her great work, Myanmae is now democratized. On this account, she was awarded to Nobel peace prize. However, she is not so popular in Japan. So we want to introduce her great work to our OE class.

Our group decided to do presentation about Aung San Suu Kyi. The reason we chose her is that she is the most famous person who contributed to the democratization of the world. She is from Myanmar. For a long time, Myanmar was militarism. But she was and is still fighting for it. In 1991 she got a Nobel Peace Prize. It is the certificate of being acccepted by the world. After that, Myanmar was still mlitarism. However, Myanmar started to become democratization recently. This is due to effort of her. Therefore we would like to do presentation about her.

The person we chose for our presentation is Takashi Sakamoto. He is an inventor of BOOK-OFF. There are two reasons why I chose him. First, I have heard that BOOK-OFF began from a very small company, however, they are becoming bigger and bigger these days. I wonder how they have become such a big company. Second, he is not so famous though he is an inspired person. I want people to know about him. Therefore, I will work hard on my presentation.

Our presentation topic is Aung San Suu Kyi. The reason why I chose her is that I just want to know more about her. She is well-known as the leader of the pro-democracy movement in Myanmar. She has faced the Myanmar’s military and has endured a lot of difficulties such as house arrest. Also, she received the Novel Peace Prize in 1991. I really respect her because she devotes her life to the movement. I think that it is far from easy for us to have courage to fight for our mother country. Nevertheless, I don’t know much about her life in detail. So, I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to make a presentation and study about that.

Our presentation topic is about Hayao Miyazaki who is the originator of Ghibli. He is one of the most famous Japanese movie directors in the world. I like his movies very much, especially "Laputa: The Flying Island" and "Princess Mononoke." It is wonderful that he was awarded Golden Bear Prize in Berlin International Film Festival!
In my experience, I have been to The Ghibli Museum twice and there were a lot of people from other countries, so I was very surprised. I knew how great a person Hayao Miyazaki is. I heve to know about him and his works as japanese. I want to understand his thought and belief more. After our presentation, I think I can enjoy his movies more than before.

My presentation topic is Hayao Miyazaki. My group members chose him because all of us love his movie. We came up to his name as soon as you said us to decide our topic. I think Hayao Miyazaki is the greatest animated filmmaker all over the world. I’ve watched a lot of Miyazaki’s animated movies since I was a child. I always watch them when they are broadcasted on TV. Of course, I’ve also been to movie theaters to see his movies several times. Miyazaki’s works are very interesting and fascinating to people, regardless of age or sex. I hope to know about him more through the preparation of this presentation.

The presentation topic of my group is Nelson Mandela. The reason which we chose him is that he has helped people and society and done something great. He had been in prison for 27 years because he jointed anti-apartheid campaign. However, after he released, he abolished apartheid with President F. W. de Klerk. Apartheid is the former political system in South Africa. White people had full political rights, but other people like black people were forced to live away from white people and go to separate schools and so on. Therefore, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and he was elected President in 1994. He has been continued to respect deeply as the "Father of the Nation" in South Africa. I think he's an inspirational person! My group will do presentation about him.

My group topic is about "Ichiro Suzuki". Firstly, he is one of the most famous Japanese baseball players.
He played an active part in many game, for example WBC in 2009 and the games when belonging to “ORIX BUFFALOES” and “Seattle Mariners”. I watched the game of WWB in 2009. It was very exciting game that I have ever watched.
Secondly, his way of living and his belief are very profound. For example, he has done about thousand practice swings and he has cared his meal in a day for many years, so he has strong belief for baseball and he has taken actions to achieve it in everyday life. In the words he said, there is a word I like. I think this word shows his belief of life. “He consistency of our thinking and action enables us to do something for a long term”.
From these reasons, I chose "Ichiro Suzuki".

His literary works became movies which have been watched by many people in the world. However, I have not read and watched his works. I think that I want to see them and know him, so I chose him.

The person who our group chose for presentation in Aung San Suu Kyi. She is a Myanmar's politician and a leader of the non-violence democratization movement. Her father is a general Aung San, who was called "Father of the Myanmar" and fought for independence. She is fighting for democratization but the Myanmar's military oppose to it. And she was under house arrest by them from 1989. Then, National League for Democracy that is led by her won an overwhelming victory on general election in 1990 , but the military didn't admit the result. She work hard for democratization in spite of these disturbances. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for1991. We want to introduce her activities and the present situation in Myanmar which are not widely known in Japan.

Our presentation topic is Aung San Suu Kyi. She is a leader of working on democratization in Myanmar. I have two reasons why I choose her. First, I'm interested in her. I studied about her when I was a high school student. The member of Aung San Suu Kyi's group made a speech at high school. I heard that speech and I want to know more about her. Second, there was a big wave in Myanmar which is a democracy. It is the best time of presentation because Aung San Suu Kyi is starting to redefine the position.

Our presentation topic is about Aung San Suu Kyi. She is a very important person who changed Myanmar. It was Aung San Suu Kyi who protested against the overwhelming military dictatorship of Myanmar. To fight against the government needs a great courage, so absolutely I can't do such a thing. The more respectable point is not having used violence to insist on her opinion. Thanks to her movement, Myanmar started to democratize. In addition, she won a Nobel Peace Prize. This means that she was accepted by all over the world. She contributed to a society thus, so we choosed her.

We chose Takashi Sakamoto as our group presentation topic about a person (alive!) who has done a great job in his or her life.
Mr.Sakamoto is the founder and EX-CEO of a company “Book Off”, purchases secondhand books, its scale is notably biggest in Japan. When he turned 69, he started his new business line “Ore no Kabusiki Gaisya”. It’s a new style of restaurant company and “Ore” is a casual word of “I” used by men.
I think he is one of those pioneers who create dramatically new type of business or its system and make it into a huge trend. I'm so excited about this task because he has much enough story to make our presentation really good and interesting one.

Our presentation topic is Ichiro Suzuki. He is a world-famous baseball player. We chose him for topic, because he has many great achievements. Ichiro is the first Japanese fielder in major league. And He got prizes of the rookie king, MVP, the leading hitter, a champion of stealing bases, Silver Slugger Award, and Gold Glove Award at the same time. Ichiro is the only person who achieved this in major league. Also, he established a new record of hitting 200 hits continuously in 10 years. Only Ichiro had achieved this record, too. These are just some parts of his achievements. He has other great achievements, too.

Our presentation topic is Aung San Suu Kyi. She is known for the leader of nonviolent democratization movement in Myanmar. Myanmar had been a military regime for a long time. Although the movement for democratization had suffered cruel oppression, she greatly contributed to making the country democratization. She was confined in her own house . While she was under hard circumstance, she fighted. She won the Noble Prize in 1991. She work for people even under hard circumstance. We were impressed by her. My presentation topic is Aung San Suu Kyi. She is a famous politician in Myanmar. I have three reasons to choose her as our group's topic. The first reason is that she never used violence to achieve her goals. Though using weapons and armed soldiers was the easiest way to show the feeling of resistance, she refused to rely on them. Myanmar was gradually democratized thanks to her effort. Another reason is that she was awarded as Nobel PeacePrize in 1991. For a long time, she continued fighting against country's military committee. Due to this prize, her fame was known to all over the world.

Our presentation topic is about Nelson Mandela, who was the leader of a group against apartheid.
I didn't choose him because I was absent from the OE2 class last week.
However, I satisfy myself that he is one of the most respectable persons in the world. There is two reasons why I think so. First, he did never give up to achieve his goal. However hard it was, he did what he thought right. Second, the influence of his action was great. He also got many prizes. Because of these, I think he is a spiritual person. I want to learn a lot of thing from him by doing presentation about him.

After being released, he abolished apartheid. In 1993, he came to be a president in Republic of South Africa. The reason why we decide to research about him is that he had put up with an unjust arrest for 27years. We were moved by him attitude and decided to research about him.
