Hi everyone, We had a really busy class today! I hope everyone enjoyed the Golden Week vacation. I went to Cebu in the Philippines. It was my second time, and I really loved it! If you would like to see photos, you can "friend" me on Facebook to see them. Discussions: Before our discussions, we reviewed Conversational Style. As you know, English conversational style is very different from the Japanese one. During a discussion, you can "jump in" at any time to ask a question or to make a comment. You don't have to wait to be invited to speak during a discussion. The handout from class is attached in a file at the end of this summary. For next week's discussions, remember these points:
Homework: 1. Discussion Preparation 2. Blog Post #4 Blog Question #4: FOR GROUP MEMBERS: Give yourself a score out of ten for your participation in today's group discussions. Why do you think you deserve this score? Give reasons and/or examples to support your answer. Example: In today's class, I would give myself a score of 8/10 for my participation. First of all, I asked my group leader when I didn't understand vocabulary. For example, I asked the group leader to tell me the meaning of "gun control" and "amendment." Second, I gave examples about Japan's gun control in the discussion. However, I didn't always make eye contact with all my group members, so this is something I need to improve next week. FOR GROUP LEADERS: Give yourself a score out of ten for your performance as a group leader. Why do you think you deserve this score? Give reasons and/or examples to support your answer. Example: In today's class, I was the group leader. I would give myself a score of 8.5/10 for my performance. First of all, I checked my group's understanding about 4 times during my summary. Also, I encouraged all my group members to participate. I asked them directly for their opinions and asked them to make comments the opinions of other group members. However, I forgot to do a pronunciation practice for my vocabulary, so I need to do this for my next discussion.
If you're interested in modern art, there is a wonderful exhibition called "All You Need is Love" at the Mori Art Museum in Roppongi Hills. The exhibition is by Yayoi Kusama, who is respected world-wide for her creative "dot" designs. It's a very rare chance to see her work, especially since she displays most of her work overseas.

In today's class, I would give myself a score of 7/10 for my participation. First, I repeated the vocabulary words with other my discussion group members. But I didn't pronounce vocabulary words correctly. Second, I made eye contact with discussion leaders and my discussion group member. For example, while discussion leaders was talking, I always made eye contact. While my group member was insisting own opinion, I often gave some slight nods. What I think that should be improved is my poor vocabulary. In discusstion, I had some hard times telling own opinion. So, I want to be able to tell my opinion correctly bynext discussion.

In today's class, I would give myself a score of 60/100 for my participation. I have bad point... The elbow was attached and the talk has been heard. The attitude which hears the talk was bad. However, I talked about many opinions and examples. So, I would like to improve the posture which hears the talk and to make more remarks in the next lesson!

In today's class, I would give a score of 7/10 for my participation. First of all, I repeated the vocabulary words correctly and I could understand all of them. Second, I understood the content of articles and the idea of the discussion leaders. I made eye contacts with the discussion leaders and heard the summary, their opinion, and group member's idea during the discussion. I made an effort to tell my opinion correctly, but it was very difficult to inform of it. It is important thing for me to study English more and improve my poor English skill.

I would give myself a score of 7/10 for my participation. First of all, I didn't able to say what I wanted to say. I thought my opinion in Japanese, so I had to translate it into English. However, I don't have a large vocabulary and wasn't able to say my opinion quickly in English. Second, I sometimes didn't understand what our discussion leaders said once. Therefore, I occasionally requested them to say again. The reason is that I didn't know the topics or the English words so much. To improve these things, I have to have more English words and concentrate more on the discussion. Besides, I have to try to say my opinion more actively. In the next lesson, I work more hard to say what I want to say!

I was a group leader in the last class, I would give myself a sore of 7/10 for my participation. I did my best so that the members could understand the meaning of difficult words, my summary, and my opinion. I explained with gestures and often made sure the members nodded. However, I didn't know how to tell them my opinion in English, so there was sometimes a silence. Although it was difficult to speak English well, I should have tell any my opinion. I shouldn't be afraid of making mistakes. I will try to tell many opinions in the next lesson.

I would give myself a score of 0/10 in the last class. This was because I was absent last class. In GW, I was very busy. I was doing the part-time job all day. Maybe, due to the tiredness of it, I overslept last Friday. However, this is only excuse. Bad is me. From this week, I want to change my mind. In order to improve English skill, I would like to participate in your class positively. I am not the leader of table, but l want to claim my opinion positively.

In the last class of OE2, I was a listener of the news discussion. I would give a score of 8/10 for my performance and perticipation. For the first reason, I tried my best to catch up with the leaders and I could understand most of the news. Secondly, at the discussion time, I also do my best answering the leaders' questions. However we had a lot of silence after we finished discussing. So then on this week I want to do my best to have a lot of talk on discussion time.

In last class, I was the group leader. I would give myself a score of 6 for my performance. Firstly, I encouraged our group members to take part in the discussion. For example, I had them made comments about the article and shared the idea with the other people. Secondly, I checked the summary of my article. Thirdly, I tried making eye contacts and gestures in the discussion. But I haven’t memorized the summary and my opinion, therefore I couldn’t make my eye contacts and gestures thoroughly. So I want to memorize the article and make more eye contacts and gestures in next discussion.

In last class I would give myself a score of 8. First reason is that I repeated the vocabulary. I also participated in the discussion, meaning I was the first one to make comment on the topic. Another reason is that I asked questions to the discussion leader to clear things out. I took off two points from my score because of my body language. I thought all discussion topics were intersting, but I was putting my elbow on the desk looking boring. Now I think it was rude, so in next class, I will be careful not to do that.

In the previous class, I was the group leader. I would give myself a score of 8/10 for my performance. First of all, I made good eye contact with all my group members. I could go on with the discussion smoothly confirming whether they were following me or not. Also, I explained my opinion clearly. When group members could not understand my opinion, I could say it in different words or give them familiar examples. However, I was extremely nervous and my mind went blank at the first group. Sometimes I was helped by my group members. I realized lack of my English skills. So I need to stay calm and explain what I want to tell group members more concisely for my next discussion.

In the last class, I would give myself a score of 7/10 for my participation. First of all, I practiced the pronunciation of the words so that I could remember them. I think it is good for us to practice saying the words which we don't know. Second, I took an eye contact with the discussion leader and sometimes asked some questions. I understood the problem of the discussion better than when I didn't take eye contacts. However, when I was asked for my opinion, I had difficulty making myself understood by the other members. I think that using body languages is important to make ourselves understood by other people. In the next class, I would like to be able to express my opinion obviously by using body languages.

In today's class, I would give myself a score of 7/10 for my participation. First of all, I asked group leader the point of not perfectly understanding in summary. Second, I always make eye contact with my all group members during the discussion. However,I did not give my opinion clearly as I imaged in Japanese. Therefore,in next class, evev if I can't convert Japanese words into English words well, I try to express my opinion.

In the last class, I was a member of the listener group. I would give myself 6/10 for my participation. I had one good point and one bad point. First, my good point was to concentrate group leader's presentation. I tried to understand the topic and asked my group leader when I couldn't understand what he (or she) said. But I also had bad point. I couldn't express my thought when my group leader asked me a opinion. I think that I have to study to increase my vocabulary. I want to do my best in the next class.

In the last class, I was a group member. I would give myself a score of 6/10 for my participation. First, I think I wasn’t active to say my opinion. I think I said my opinion only when I was asked by group leader. Second, I was irritated when I was asked questions. This is because the words which I want to say didn’t come out smoothly. However, there is a good point too. I always made eye contact with my group member and leader.

In the last class, I was the group leader. I would give myself a score of 7/10 for my performance. I prepared for telling the summary and my opinion but I forgot to prepare for the pronunciation of my vocabulary. Therefore, I couldn't tell my group members the right pronunciation. This was my bad point but I think there was also good points. I often checked my group members' understanding during summary and I answered the questions from members as carefully as I could. I tried to have summary understood by all members.

I would give 7/10 points to myself. I was a member of the discussion, and while the leader is speaking I tried to make eye contact, not only with the speaker but also with the other members. Also, using body languages made the discussion more aggressive. It makes us easy to understand what people want to say, or helps us to express what is on our mind even when we can’t completely state our opinion. I’m not used to getting up early so I yawned for a few times, which I did repent of. Next time I'm going to give my own speech so during the discussion I'll be careful not to yawn for a single time, and not to not to give opinions through stereotype.

In today's class, I would give myself a score of 5/10 for my participation. First, I understood mistaken summary. For example, a discussion leader of my group talk about Justin Bieber having visited to the Anne Frank museum. When she asked discussion's questions, I can't answer them because of my false understanding. Second, I could say vocabulary without shame. I think that I remember words for uttering them in practice. However, I had almost not known vocabularies. Therefore, I want to improve knowledge ofvocabulary and understanding next week.

In the last class, I was a group member and I would give myself a score 8/10. There are two good reasons and a bad one. The first good reason is because I made everyone talk more by asking quesions besides the ones the leader made. The second good reason is because I made sure everyone took eye-contact with each other. The bad reason is because I couldn't think of any opinions that much. Next time, I will try to talk more about my own opinion and make the others say something, too.

In the last class, I would give myself a score of 6/10 for my participation. First of all, I tried hard to understand what group leader wants to say. I asked my group leader the meaning of words and sentences when I didn't understand. Second, I could use body language naturally. For example, I made eye contact with the members and leaders, and nodded if I could understand or agree with someone’s opinion.

In the last class, I would give myself 8/10. I tried to make eye contacts with group leaders to show that I am listening to their presentations. Also, I nodded when they were stating their opinions to show that I agreed to them. Adding to that, I asked questions when I did not know what the word meant. The reason I subtracted two points is that I could not give my opinions much. It was difficult for me to think quickly and respond to the leaders.

In today's class, I was the group leader. I would give myself a score of 5/10 for my performance. I encouraged members to practice wards. Also I said my opinion clearly. However, my topic was difficult, so members couldn't say opinion clearly. And we can't heated discussion because the topic lacked a sense of reality. I decide that I will chose easy-to-understand topic. I want to lead heat discussion.
