Hi everyone,

Finally!  The sun is out!  I hope it'll stay this way all weekend!

Presentation Outlines:
At the start of the lesson, I pointed out the presentation outlines in the Presentation section of the website.  For the next two weeks, you'll have to start your group research and complete the outline.  The outline is due on Friday, November 1 by email before 12noon.

Interactions:
The feedback from today's interactions is attached at the end of this entry.  These are the comments I typed on the screen during our lesson.  For next week's leaders, please include these pointers into your interactions.

Many of you made comments on last week blog that the videos are challenging because of the speed.  Don't panic!  Your listening will improve during the semester.  You do NOT need to understand everything.  The most important point is to understand the main ideas.

Homework:
1.  Listening Interactions preparation (see schedule)
2.  Listening Report #2 (due Oct. 31)
3.  Blog Post #4

Blog Question #4:

What is your presentation topic?  Why did your group choose this topic?

*Write 8-10 sentences.
*Use capitalization, punctuation & spelling correctly.
*Submit by Wednesday, October 23 by 6:00pm.

My group’s presentation topic is WWF, World Wide Fund for Nature. The reason is that we're interested in the working of WWF. For example, endangered species, pollution and climate change. I think we can’t avoid these problems and we need to tackle them. It’s also concerned with the conservation of three biomes which contain most of the world's biodiversity, oceans and coasts, forests, and freshwater ecosystems. I knew it’s the world's largest independent conservation organization. It works in more than 100 countries and supports around 1,300 conservation and environmental projects. However, I don’t know the details, so I want to know more. I hope that not only we but also our classmates who will listen to our presentation will be able to understand about WWF.

We chose as the presentation topic, “FREE THE CHILDREN JAPAN ”. I have two reasons. Firstly, I major in education, so I am interesting in education, children and the circumstance in the world except for those of Japan, in particular, those of developing or poor countries. Secondly, this organization does a variety of things around the world, but this organization emphasizes the autonomy of the children. It is important to provide commodities to these countries ,however, I think when the children live until they grow up, they have time to do things by oneself. So it is important for them to acquire the autonomy. From these reasons, I decided to do presentation about this organization.

I‘m in the group 1 and our presentation topic is about World Vision. The reason why I chose this topic is that I’m majoring in education at this university. World Vision is an international NGO and it aims to settle the poverty problem mainly for children in developing countries. For example, there are many children who cannot go to school around the world because they are short of money. World Vision helps such children through a variety of activities such as collecting contributions. I’m interested in the education not only in Japan but also that in foreign countries. However, I usually study education in Japan and there are few opportunities to learn overseas educational problems. So I would like to make good use of this presentation in order to expand my scope.

My group’s presentation topic is World Vision. I chose this topic because I’m in the department of education. World Vision is one of NGO organizations which support children in developing countries. Three main activities of World Vision are child sponsorship, ready service, and advocacy. Child sponsorship is the activity to support children in developing countries by paying 4500yen every month. And in ready service, World Vision distributes blankets, foods, and clothes widely. In advocacy, they work on government, citizens, and also regions which need supports, to change policies or society itself. World Vision is an organization which does such activities to help developing countries.

Our group decided on presentation about WWF, World Wide Fund for Nature. They are NGO and the policy of WWF is to build a future in which people live in harmony with nature. They hava 4 topics protecting earth. Fightind global warming, building a sustainable society, protecting wild animals and protecting forest and ocean. The symbol of them is a panda. I often come across this symbol. In Japan, WWF protect dugongs in Okinawa, tuna, whales. I should research about WWF, and tell classmates all allures.

Our group's topic is the Japanese Red Cross Society. We chose this topic because we should know what activity it is carrying out. JRCS is one of the famous NGOs and we've heard this name. However, we don't know exactly how they are actively involved in our lives. We often see that it appeal for blood donations. JRCS played important part in the season's 26 th typhoon that cause a lot of damage to Izu-Oshima island and 3.11 that brought serious confusion and fear. It is also working abroad and serving for people who have some difficulties. We should study about JRCS and tell the classmates about it.

My presentation topic is "Teach for Japan." Teach for Japan is NPO which educates children who are hard to study because of family reasons. Also, such activities lead to provide students who want to be a teacher with teaching experience. Our group chose this because we are major in education and psychology, so it's familiar to us. In fact, one of our members belongs to the NPO. We will ask him the story about his experience. I hope to make good presentation with the members.

Our group chose "Teach for Japan" as the theme of presentation. Its parent organization is "Teach for America" , which is the most popular educational NPO group in America. I major in psychology and I am interested in the developmental psychology. Education plays an important part in the healthy growth of people. But, there are children who can't afford to receive education because of family conditions. Teach for Japan support such children. They also give a chance to people who want to work at educational site. Education is investment for our future and thinking about it is important thing. We want to think over Japanese present education through the activity.

Our presentation topic is "Ashinaga Scholarship Society". "Ashinaga Scholarship Society" is a nonprofit organization which support children who lost their parents. "Ashinaga Scholarship Society" was established by Yoshiomi Tamai for the purpose of repayment of an obligation. The reason we chose this topic is because we knew about it. In addition, I receive a scholarship, so I feel strong affinities with it. If we lost my parents, we received support of "Ashinaga Scholarship Society". So, I think that we must know about it. we will carefully investigate it in order to success our presentation.

Our presentation topic is about Free the Children JAPAN. Why we chose this topic is that the organization work as a volunteer about children. I am interested in an education and a child welfare volunteer, and I belong to a club activity of the child welfare volunteer now. But my club supports only japanese children, I want to search FTCJ which helps many people in the world. For example, it builds a school, give to medical supplies and copes with problem of child labor in developing countries.
Through the research of FTCJ we will understand social issues of the world.

Our presentation topic is "Free The Children Japan." All of our group members are interested in education and welfare so we wanted to study about a group related with children.
I have never heard of FTCJ before, but now I know this group plays an important part in the world. There are many problems about children around the world. We don't think about children labor ploblem if we are in Japan. However we have to think about this because I think Indifference and ignorance are not good thing.
Also, I was impressed with the ideas of FTCJ. Therefore we decided to present about this group.

The topic of my group presentation is Japanese Red Cross Society. There are two reasons why I chose this topic. First, I don't know much about them, but I have heard that they supported many people suffering from the Tohoku earthquake. For example, they often collect money from all around Japan so that people in Tohoku can live comfortably. Also they provide people living in temporary houses with household electric appliances. I want to know more about them. Second, I think there are many people who don't know about their activities as I don't. I want many people to know more about Japanese Red Cross Society so that everyone can support people who need help. I would like to work hard with the preparation of our presentation.

Our presentation topic is about “Free the Children Japan”. I have two reasons why I chose this topic. First, I’m interested in activities related children. FTCJ helps poor children around the world. Second, I’m impressed by the idea of FTCJ and I want to tell it to many people. It says that “Children are presence not need someone’s help but can make changes”. It was founded by a boy twelve years of age, so it respects the power of children itself. I think it is children who can make the world better. I want to insist on it through this presentation.

Our presentation topic is "Ashinaga Ikueikai." This is a nonprofit organization in Japan. Their activity is to give educational and emotional support for orphans worldwide. This organization started over 40 years ago, and a original founder and current president is Yoshiomi Tamai. It focuses on educating and nurturing future leaders who will contribute to society. So, Ashinaga provides scholarships to orphaned students, including children who lost parents in the earthquake in 2011. Immediately after the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in March 2011, Ashinaga announced to provide emergency relief grants to children who had lost parents to the disaster. We should know about this organization, and help for many children.

This presentation activity will sure be a good opportunity to learn things I cannot earn in ordinary studying. I hope other group members learn something from our presentation.
