IE 3 Core Thursday: Lesson 2

4/16/2015

Hi everyone,

It's only our second lesson, but it was just as busy as our first one. Just one more day, and you can all say TGIF! Do you remember that expression from class today?

The Secret Garden and Literary Terms:
After speed discussion, we had a quiz on chapters1-8 of The Secret Garden. Remember to finished read the rest of th story for next week. We will be using it in class for all of April.

We also had a short activity that introduced literary terms.  You will have to analyze each of these terms for your book reports.  In today's class, we learned about (1) the protagonist; (2) the antagonist; (3) point of view; and (4) setting.

Discussion Leading:
Before we started our discussions, we went through the procedure for leading a discussion. We also looked at the criteria that I will use to evaluate your discussions each week.

Group Discussions:
You did a good job at giving your opinions and asking for the opinions of your other group members. However, remember these points to improve your discussions next week:
  1. Pronunciation practice. When you teach your vocabulary to your group, remember to have your group pronounce each new word 5-6 times. If you want to remember a word, you must know its pronunciation.
  2. Use conversation style.  In a discussion, all participants are responsible for making it successful.  When a group member gives his/her opinion, the leader and the other members have to make comments on that opinion.  Participants do not have to wait to be invited to give a comment - just "jump into" the discussion.

Journal:
You exchanged journals with your writing partner.  You will keep your partner's journal this week and write 3 pages in your partner's journal:
a.  one page of comments on your partner's writing
b.  two pages on this week's new topic

Homework:
1.  Discussion preparation (see schedule)
2.  Journal entry #2:  langauge learning experiences
3.  Read Graded Reader (15+ pages)
4.  The Secret Garden (ch. 8-15)
  • Quiz on your reading next week!
5.  Blog posting #2

Blog Question #2:

In my opinion, smart phones have changed our daily lives. Now, we can not only call, send e-mails, but also use internet and search everything by using smartphones. Smartphones are parts of our daily lives. We can no longer live without smartphone. Smartphones are very useful. But, we should learn sense of occasion to use them.Excessive enthusiasm for smartphones sometimes make our friends so unpleasant, I think. We should cherish direct conversation with other people.

As I see it, smart phones are necessary for our lives. Now we rely on them, and cannot live without them. Smartphones makes our lives comfortable. For example, we can gen in touch with friends if they are not same place or we can surfing the net in any place. Nevertheless, smartphones have weakness ponits. If we use it for long times every day, our eyesight will go down. In addition to this, we cease to communicate face to face because we dont have to do it if we have smartphones. So from now on, we have to consider how to use them in our lives, and we should use them appropriately.

If you ask me, the most annoying thing is crowed train during rush hour. I've experienced it for the first time when I was high school student. Crowed train for the first time was too much annoying and I've clearly remembered it. Then, a train was delayed so hundreds of people who waited for it were there. Therefore,It's difficult to get on it. I've had little bit of my belongs by chance. Office workers rushed into the train and girl's students were crashed. The scene was extremely chaotic and this is very annoying for me.

In my opinion, living in Tokyo is comfortable, because all amusements gather in Tokyo. For instance, if you have a favorite singer, you can go to the live concert. Even more, if you want to go to amusement parks with your friends, you can quickly and easily go there, for example “Tokyo Disney Resort” and “Fuji-Q Highland”. From this point, Tokyo is very good place to live in. However, there is bad point. It is that there are many people. When I started to live in Tokyo, I was overwhelmed by the rush hours. Nevertheless, to live in Tokyo is good, if you seek amusement.

In my opinion, living Tokyo is very useful, but it have bad points. I had never lived in Tokyo until last year, so I had not know how it was. At first, I was so confused to the number of people and dirtiness. When I visited Shibuya, I was very confused and tired because there were too many people and not clear. It is one of the bad point to live Tokyo. In contrast, I can find many events and part-time jobs in Tokyo. I can go many famous places easily, and experience good part-time jobs. In conclusion, Living in Tokyo has both good and bad points.

I think living in Tokyo is so comfortable. There are two reasons for my opinion. First, I can go to the concert easily if I live in Tokyo. Moreover I don't need to worry about the end time of the concert. Second, transportation system in Tokyo is very useful, so it can take me anywhere without having much time. However, Tokyo has bad points. For example, the air is dirtier than that in rural. And Tokyo is always crowded by people and it annoys me. As I said, Tokyo has both good aspects and bad aspects.

Personally, what annoys me the most is that getting smoke at a restaurant, but I don’t mean that I hate people who smoke. Last week I went to a restaurant which was not separated into two areas, for non-smokers and smokers. When we got seats, the people next to our table were smoking while they are eating, and the smoke came toward us. Therefore, we could not enjoy our dinner and got out of there soon. Moreover, some people smoke while walking and the smoke go to the person behind them. Smokers should aware of the fact that some people cannot stand being smoked. These days, more and more places have been separated or even prohibited from smoking, such as stations. Smokers need to have a good manner so everyone can live comfortably.

In my opinion, living in Tokyo is a very good experience. I started to live here a year ago. Before I started to live here, I didn’t want to live in Tokyo because it’s so noisy, crowded and I get away from my family. And still, I think Tokyo is a very noisy and crowded city. However, I decided to live in Tokyo because my father said that it will be a good experience for me. In this one year, I experienced many things. For example, very crowded trains, meet a famous people, buy unique material goods and so on. I can't experience these things in my hometown so I'm happy to be here.

In my opinion, living in Tokyo is very convenient. I'll show you some reasons. First, there are many trains. We can go anywhere very easily. Second, there are many shops. If you go to Tokyo, you can get everything you want. However there are also many people. Tokyo is always crowded. It is very noisy and stressful for me. So I like Tokyo but I don't want to live in Tokyo.

In my opinion, the most annoying thing is that people walk with doing something. Many Japanese walk with listening music, using smartphone and so on. If people walk with listening to music, they couldn't hear the sound of around them. And, if people walk with using smartphone, they couldn't look around them. It is very dangerous. The number of people who walk with do something is increasing. If many people do that, it is easy to happen accident. So, people should walk with seeing ahead. Some people walk with smaoking. It influences on other people. People should obey the manar.

In my opinion, the best Japanese food is Ra-men. In addition, my favorite food is also this. There're two reasons why this food is the best. First, Ra-men has various taste. The taste is different each places. For example, there is Ra-men with pork bone broth in Fukuoka, and with solt soup in Kanagawa, with seafood stock in Hokkaido. When you have an opportunity to visit there, you should go to the local Ra-men store and eat it. Another reason is that we can eat Ra-men soon after we ordered it. I suggest to go to Ra-men store when you're very hungry.

I think living in Tokyo causes good effects.
At first, there are many trains in Tokyo.
Thanks to such trains,we can go anywhere.
For example, the new bullet train called Hokuriku line started to work.
In addition,in the future, the new train which runs the fastest in the world would start to run.
Secondary,we can find many shops in big cities.
As we can see,in shibuya, there are many shops:109,tsutaya,and more.
It's so convenient to buy something, isn't it?
In summary,if we choose to live in Tokyo,we can comfortably live in.
