IE3 Core Friday: Lesson 6

5/17/2015

Hi everyone,

What a beautiful day today! I hope you can enjoy the sunshine during your breaks.

In-text Citation:

After speed discussion, we learned to put direct quotes from your novels into your book reports. This is called in-text citation, and we use it to show when we are using ideas from other sources (e.g. like the characters in your novels, or from the author).

Also, we need to use in-text citation to avoid plagiarism (= copy somebody’s idea and claim it as your own).  If you use another person’s idea, you must tell the reader where you got that information.

1.  Direct Quote
When you use a direct quote, you are quoting the information directly from your novel.  For example:

By the end of his adventure, Santiago realizes that "the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself" (Coelho 73).

This tells us that "the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself" is a sentence from the novel by the author Coelho, and this information is on page 73.

MLA Referencing:
We also learned how to write down the source information from your graded readers.  This is called MLA Referencing.  For most of your references, you need to use this format.

Author. Title. City of Publication: Publisher, year.

The Secret Garden

Discussions:
For next week's discussions, remember these points:
  1. Follow-up Questions. When your group leader or group member makes a comment. Ask a follow-up question. This question asks the speaker to give more information.

1.  Discussion Preparation

  • email your book report to me by Friday, May 22 by 12:00noon to ntakeda.aogaku@yahoo.com

I haven't seen english musical before, therefore I was excited when I heard we can go to see the secret garden. However, I was afraid if I can listen to actor's speech. Before watching musical, I read the story to understand contents. In real, I could not listen well because they speek very quicly but I could enjoy visually. I must enhance my listening ability more.

I saw the English musical for the first time. It was difficult for me to understand all English, but I enjoyed the musical. Especially, I was impressed by actors' and actress' voices and songs. They changed the volume of their voices every scenes. When their feelings rose up, I was surprised at the power of the voices. Also, their songs were very beautiful. I thought that the songs were essential elements of the musical. Finally, the ending was very impressive. This time, I spent very meaningful time.

I have never seen the English musical. I saw the English musical for the first time. I couldn't understand English, it was so hard to me to understand all English conversations. However, it was so fun. Musical has many songs but book has no songs so I think musical is more fun than book. Also I impressed with actors' voice and singing voice. Their voice is so big and clear. I became to want to be able to understand all English at musical.

I was impressed with the musical The Secret Garden because this was my first observation of musical. The voice of the actors was so clear, and their songs moved me. In particular, Mary and Martha had wonderful voice. Although I could not keep up with some parts of the story because the actors spoke fast especially in the scene of quarrel, I tried hard to understand the characters’ words as much as possible. Furthermore, since they did not use so difficult words, I could catch the major part of the story. Seeing the musical in English helped me improve my Listening skills. Besides, I think students can enjoy learning with the English musical. It was a good experience that I went to see the musical in English.

It was second time to see all English musical for me. I was so moved! I couldn't understand why there were a lot of ghosts on the right side at first. Two ghosts like Indian were so interesting. They were my favoriteLoL The voice of Mary and Colin were very cute, and that of Lily was very very beautiful. I was impressed by her ”Come to My Garden”. I shed tears when Mr.Craven came back home and everybody became happy together. It was difficult for me to understand all of contents, but I think I came to be able to understand more than the past.

I went to see the Secret Garden last Thursday, so I didn't know anything. This was my first experience to watch English musical I was surprised that there are ghost. The actors are very good at singing and I was moved it. Their voice was very strong. The English in the musical was difficult for me but I enjoyed watching. The scene that Mr.Craven and the ghost of Mrs.Craven meet was the best one I like. I want to watch this musical after I can understand English more.

It was my first time to see an all English musical. Although I couldn't understand English so much, I was very impressed that musical enabled the observers to understand its contents by actors' ability of expression. They exaggerated their feelings and their lines. I thought that was the key to be understood by observers like me who couldn't understand English. By the way, how wonderful voices Mary and Martha had!! I had goosebumps when I heard their songs! Also,I was fascinated! I sang "Come to My Garden" with Saeri on the way to home♪ If I have a chance, I would like to see a musical again.

I surprised that there are a few different points from original. First, there were many ghost in the secret garden. I could not see ghosts in original but in the musical, ghosts were important part for this tale. Their songs were very beautiful and I was moved. Second, Mary was too bad girl. It is just me or Mary was too sarcastic. I laughed at that her behavior. The secret garden was very impressive musical, so I want to see again.
