IE3 Core Friday: Lesson 10

6/12/2015

Hi everyone,

We have just five more week left of our course after today's lesson, which means the last major assignment will be your book report! From July, our classes will be a little less busy.

Presentations:
Overall, I was really impressed with your presentations today, especially with how you described your graphs and pictures in your slides.

There were a few points you can improve on when you have presentations in English in future course:
  1. Make eye contact with the audience. When you want to explain a graph on your slide, you still need to make eye contact (and avoid talking to the screen). You can look at the screen, but keep your focus on the audience.
  2. Speak loud enough. Although you are nervous during a presentation, it's important to speak loud enough. This shows the audience that you are confident in your message.
  3. Practice numbers. If you have to use large numbers in your presentation, learn how to say them and practice saying the before your presentation.

Homework:
  1. Blog Comment #9
  2. Discussion Preparation
  3. Journal Topic #8: rainy season
  4. Finish reading your graded reason (bring to class next week)

Blog Question #9:

Give your opinion on the presentation that you liked the best. Give two reasons why you liked it, and give support for each reason (e.g. explanation, example, etc.)

  • Write 8-10 sentences.
  • Use capitalization, punctuation & spelling correctly.
  • Submit by Thursday, June 19 10 by 6:00pm

I was impressed by all of my classmates' great presentation. If I have to choose one favorite group, I choose Natsumi's group. The reason why I chose them is, probably almost all of classmates might say same reason as me, that they hardly saw their scripts. They had eye contact many times, and did not look down. So, I felt their statement was strong. Furthermore, their slides were so interesting and easy to understand. Social security is something boring issue, but their presentation was not. For these reasons, I liked Natsumi's group presentation.

I thought that all peresentations were wonderful. Every groups did their best. If I choose the best group, I pick up Saeri's group. First, I was interested in the theme of this group. Hikikomori is an immediate problem for young people. Also, group members were seemed to have studied this problem. Their materials for a presentation was easy to understand and detailed. Finally, the volume of voice and speaking speed was just the right. It was comfortable for me to listen to their presentation.

I was impressed with all groups' presentations. Especially, I liked the presentation of Natsumi's group. First, they showed the outline and summary on their slides. Therefore, although social security problem is difficult, I could understand about them easily. Their slides helped me to understand. Second, they avoided reading and made eye contacts. Therefore, their voices were clear and easy to listen. In addition, their presentation was persuasive. That's why, I think that Natsumi's group presentation was better.

Although all groups had good presentations, I think Kota's group particularly had great work. One of the reason I chose the group is that they tried to avoid reading their scripts and to make eye contact with audience. Plus, they let audience join their presentation by asking questions to them. Because sometimes listeners tend to be bored to just listen, asking questions is one of the solutions to prevent to make audience passive. Another reason I liked the group best is their supportive evidences and data were well researched. The data supported their presentation effectively. For these reasons, I chose Kota's group.

All presentations was wonderful. However, I liked Saeri's group the best. First, topic was interesting. Hikikomori is a serious problem but I have not thout as serious. After their presentation, I understood easily and interested it. Second, they speaked with clrear voice. Thanks to them, I understood all contents. Finally, their eye contact was very good. Not reading is very difficult but they did not read their paper. For these reasons, I chose their group.

I was a nervous on my presentation. I was impressd Natsumi's group presentation. Because first, they are a loud voice so I could hear crealy. Second slides are interesting. I was interested in contents and I could understand social security. I should make slides which are easy to see for listeners. I thought it is important to attract listeners.

I thought that all presentations were great. I could get new knowledge through each presentation. But if I must choose one of them, I choose Natumi's group presentation. Because the topic of their presentation was very difficult, however, they put vocabulary and meanings on their slide at first. It was very nice idea. I think that we should have done such a thing. And there were some good points in their presentation. Firstly, Natumi greeted with lovely voice. Secondly, they didn't see their script during their presentation. Lastly, their slides were very easy for me to understand. So I thought that their presentation were best of all.

The resentation group that left the biggest impression on me was Natsumi.H's group. Her group made a presentation about social seculity. In fact, I know about it a little, so I think that I clearly figure out now's Japanese social seculity for the first time. Her group's presentation was so easy to understand for me and I had interest in it.

Last week, I was surprsied because every groupe did very good work. Most interesting theme was Hikikomori which was introduced by Kei, Saeri and Ai. The reason I choose this group is that I didn't know why Hikikomori is born. In addition, most presentation is just talked by speakers, however Kei questioned me how to deal with Hikikomori if I make friends with them, which makes me interested in their topic more. Thanks to Kei, I wasn't bored and could think the problem well. And I thought it good that Saeri didn't see scripts and tried to make eye contact. I was tend to read my scripts, therefore I should have memorized.
