IE Core 3 Friday: Lesson 8

5/29/2015

Hi everyone,

We are officially half way through our course. We'll be quite busy in June with our presentations and Book Report #2, but July will not be as busy. Work hard for the next few weeks, and you can have a bit of a break in July.

Vocabulary Building:
During speed discussion, I demonstrated vocabulary collocation (=learning vocabulary in groups). Instead of making lists of words, it's better to make a group of words that are connected to the same topic. In this way, you can remember vocabulary more easily. For example, you can have this group of words connected to the word "smoking":

smoking --> causes cancer
smoker / non-smoker
--> first-hand smoke/second-hand smoke

Make sure you note down the vocabulary from speed discussion and from your discussions each week.

Presentations:
We continued with learning about presentations. In today's lesson, we learned how to use visuals. There are a variety of visuals that you can use for your presentation:
  1. Graphs: vertical/horizontal bar, pie, line graphs
  2. Pictures: photos, illustrations, diagrams, maps
  3. Charts: title, overview, bullet, flowchart

We also learned how to explain graphs and maps. When you explain a graph, use the following steps:
  1. Introduce the chart.
  2. Explain the chart.
  3. Emphasize what is important on the chart.

All of our presentation handouts from class today can be found in the Presentation section of the website.

Discussions:
For next week's discussions, remember these points:
  1. Transitions. Use transitions to connect your discussions. When you want to end one section of your discussion, you can say "Well, that's it for ... Let's move onto ..." (e.g. Well, that's it for my summary. Let's move onto my opinion.)
  2. Titles. Be careful when using titles in English. Like Japanese, in formal situations, you use the family name. For men, you add Mr., and for women, you add Ms. (e.g. Mr. Suzuki / Mr. Jones / Ms. Suzuki / Ms. Jones). The titles Miss (for single women) and Mrs. (for married women) are not used in professional situations since a woman's marital status is private information. For university instructors, you should use the title "professor" (e.g. Professor Suzuki) unless you instructor has told you to call them by another name.

Homework:

Blog Question #8:

Give your opinion on your presentation's social problem and recommend two solutions.

In my opinion, suicide is an important social issue facing Japanese society. One reason for Japan's high suicide rate is because of the lack of awareness about mental health issues and the lack of services for those with mental illness. One solution is to ... Another one is to ...

Today, Japan faces the problem of underage drinking. I think that underage drinking rate has increased because drink is becoming all too familiar to us. As one of the solutions, government must make the situation hard to dabble in drink. Recently, drink is sold in convenience store or supermarket, so people can get them easily. Also, the young tend to have interest in drink by TV commercial and the taste that the young like. Therefore, these situations should be improved. As another solution, store must confirm age completely when they sell drink. According to the drinking law, store must confirm age by identification card, but there is a case where they don't when the store is crowded. This situation leads underage drinking increase, so store should confirm age every time.

In my opinion, social security, especially public assistance, is one of the most serious social issues in Japan. Public assistance, of course, helps those who are difficult to live by theirselves. However, some welfare recipients use the money for gambling or luxury things. The government cannot deal with such injustices. First of all, Japanese people have to know about the facts and circumstances of public assistance and welfare recipients to solve the problem. In addition, it is necessary to reconsider the requirement of public assistance. The government should cope with unfair recipients.

Our presentation topic is aging society. After WWⅡ, many children were born but now there are less of them. One reason why aging society is not good is that workers bear the cost of social security more. I think the solution is to save money for their own social security. Aging society also cased by latter marriage. It's more difficult for older women to bear babys than younger. I think the cause is the company is unkindness for women. The system for women after giving birth is immatre. Thernfore it should be improved.

In my opinion, underage drinking is the social problem in Japan. Recently, we accept young people drinking. It is bad situation. So we have to check age for all people if you enter the bar. Or the school teach dangerous to drink liquor. We don't know dangerous to drink for juvenile. Even a little amount are so dangerous for our body. We should know it is dangerous to drink liquir when you are a child. Parents, scool or friends should teach many knowledge about liquir.

In my opinion, smartphone addiction is a serious problem today. As we popularize smartphone, it is convenient for us to contact someone. But talking with someone face to face is decreasing. We are losing our ability to talk with someone. And smartphone is easy to use for us, so we use one while doing something. And accompanying it, there are a lot of danger because we can't pay attention to surrounding while we use smartphone. One solution is that we should pay attention to surrounding. Another one is to understand the danger of using smartphone.
