Hi everyone,

Can you believe that we're almost half way through our course? I hope you're making progress with your English communication skills.

Presentations:
After speed discussion, you received the guidelines for your group presentations that you'll present near the end of June. We also learned about the different parts of a presentation and expressions for each part.

All of our presentation materials and today's slide presentation are in the Presentation section of the website. Also, you can find the Presentation Outline template in that section.

Showing Interest:
Before our discussions, we had a short activity on how to show interest during a discussion. We need to show interest to let the speaker know that we are listening to him/her. You can use these expressions:
  1. Fixed Expressions: I see, Ya/Yes, Uh-huh, Mm-mm
  2. Suprise: Oh my God! Really? Wow!
  3. Sympathy: Oh no! What a shame. That's to bad.

Discussions:
For next week's discussions, remember these points:
  1. Member interactions. In your discussions, there is a lot of communication between the group lead and the members. However, we need more communication among members. To improve member interactions, group leaders can ask these questions: (1) Are there any comments on ...'s opinion? (2) Do you agree with ...'s opinion?
  2. Read the news. Some of your had a difficult time in today's discussions because of the topics. These issues are important to Japanese society, so it's a good idea to get into reading the news each day. Try to read the news for 10-15 minutes on your smart phones while you're on the train.

Homework:

1.  Blog Post #7
2.  Discussion Preparation
3.  Read Graded Reader (15 pages)
4.  Journal Topic #6: a Japanese social issue
5.  Presentation outline
  • submit Monday, June 1 by 12:00 noon to ntakeda.aogaku@yahoo.com

Blog Question #7:

We have finished our first round of discussions. You have received a lot of feedback in our lessons and on your worksheets.

Which three points do you think you have to focus on to improve your next discussion?

  • Write 8-10 sentences.
  • Use capitalization, punctuation & spelling correctly.
  • Submit by Thursday, May 28 by 6:00pm.

Next, i use Japanese during my discussion. i do not think i use Japanese. it is my bad habit. i wii do my best not to use Japanese. Last, i handed in my paper in so late. but Properly i've done my paper, so i don't mind. In next paper, i promise that i shall hand in it by a deadline.

Three important things I learned from our first round of discussion are asking questions or exchange opinions anytime, supporting ideas, and making eye contact.
First of all, it is important for group members to ask questions and exchange their opinions anytime they want. Some of my friends in another class think the leaders should point out someone when they ask members' opinions because members are waiting chances to tell opinions. However, it is typically Japanese style. I feel I have to try to speak more freely and actively.
As a group leader, supporting ideas is important to let members understand easily. Some news are difficult to explain but I'd like to change the words and paraphrase the fact in easy way in the next discussion.
Eye contact is important as both a member and a leader. Japanese, including me, tend to just read their articles, so we have to make more eye contact and make sure that all members share the ideas.
I'd like to carry out these three points and improve my discussion skills.

First of all, I need to discuss by conversational style. This style: jump in, ask a question and make a comment was difficult for me. However, this style is very important for all members to join the discussion and have each opinion. Therefore, I must try to learn this style. Second, I should avoid reading the paper in order to make eye contact with members. In addition, I want to use more "Are you following me?" I learned that these points are important to check the group's understanding. Next time, I want to do my best while paying attention to these three points.

I learned three things through first round of discussion. First, eye contact. When I my first discussion, I inly read my paper and there are few eye contact. I could not make my group understand my summary and my opinion. Second, conversation style. Until now, I asked and answered in order. But, we have to ask and answer actively in no order. When do so, our discussion will be better. Third, checking which my group members understand my discussion. In my first one, I neglected it so my discussion was not success. I will try checking and explain well. I want to succeed my next discussion!

Firstly, when I'm not leader, I want to join discussion. I can answere when I was asked. However, it's difficult for me to ask someones about their opinions. Secondly, I have to improve my pronunciation. I want to practice it. I think speaking bigger voice is also important. Finally, good gestures make our discussions smoothly. Gesture is help us to understand something clearly.

I learned two important things in IE3 discussion. First of all, the most important thing is saying something actively. Until I was a freshman, I waited for someone's opinion. But I realized it is not good. I always try to make remarks earier than group members. Second, nodding is good for leaders. When I am a discussion leader, some members are nodding. I know they are listening to me, and I feel happy. I also learned the importance of eye contact. Therefore, I am going to take care of these points in group discussion.
