IE 3 Core Friday: Lesson 2

4/17/2015

12 Comments

Hi everyone,

It's only our second lesson, but it was just as busy as our first one. Just one more day, and you can all say TGIF!

The Secret Garden and Literary Terms:
After speed discussion, we had a quiz on chapters1-8 of The Secret Garden. Remember to finished read the rest of th story for next week. We will be using it in class for all of April.

We also had a short activity that introduced literary terms.  You will have to analyze each of these terms for your book reports.  In today's class, we learned about (1) the point of view; and (b) the protagonist.

Discussion Leading:
Before we started our discussions, we went through the procedure for leading a discussion. We also looked at the criteria that I will use to evaluate your discussions each week.

Group Discussions:
You did a good job at giving your opinions and asking for the opinions of your other group members. However, remember these points to improve your discussions next week:
  1. Pronunciaton practice. Make sure you have a pronunciation practice after you teacher your vocabulary to your group. Make your group say each new word 4-5 times. In order to remember the word, you need to know how to say it.
  2. Use conversation style.  In a discussion, all participants are responsible for making it successful.  When a group member gives his/her opinion, the leader and the other members have to make comments on that opinion.  Participants do not have to wait to be invited to give a comment - just "jump into" the discussion.

Journal:
You exchanged journals with your writing parter.  You will keep your partner's journal this week and write 3 pages in your partner's journal:
a.  one page of comments on your partner's writing
b.  two pages on this week's new topic

Homework:
1.  Discussion preparation (see schedule)
2.  Journal entry #2:  langauge learning experiences
3.  Read Graded Reader (15+ pages)
4.  The Secret Garden (ch. 8-15)
  • Quiz on your reading next week!
5.  Blog posting #2
6.  Choose your Book Report essay questions
7.  Bring 2500 円 for the musical

Blog Question #2:
Choose one of the topics below. Give your opinion on the topic. Use an opinion giving expression, and give a reason and an example to support your opinion.

Remember to start your opinion with an opinion expressions (e.g. In my opinion, ... / As I see it, ...)

* the most annoying thing
(In my opinion, the most annoying thing is ...)

* the best Japanese food
(As I see it, the best Japanese food is...)

* learning languages
(If you ask me, learning languages is ...)

* living in Tokyo
(I think living in Tokyo is...)

* smart phones

In my opinion, smart phones are very useful and many people in the world use them. Today, in Japan, most of the people have at least one smart phone. My father has three of them and even my younger sister, only 12 years old has one of them. On the other hand, I think this popularization of smart phones has some bad influences to us. In the train every day, I see almost all people gazing at their phones. Not just in the train but also in the class. Many students take out their phones right after the chime rings. I could say this because I'm the very man. When I did'nt have a phone I used to read many books in the train and even in the short break in school. But now I use my phone to play games all day night. I think there are many people like me and I'm sure that this is a waste of time. Smart phones are absolutely convinient but we should think better of how we use it.

I think that living in Tokyo is comfort and good city and then has many more advantages in Japan. Living environments are good!. Wherever you live is, there are many supermarkets and convenience store
within walking distance first. You don't worry about going some shopping to far away. it is very convenience and women safely go out late at night. Next, there are the highly convenient means of transportation. In Tokyo, if you feel being late, you do not have to get on the train that you are going to do since the trains come every few minutes. In countrysides,On the other hand, there are almost not supermarket, convenience store and trains, so they need to have a car. If they do not have it, it is hard to live there. If I were them, I would want to go to Tokyo. Tokyo is the capital of Japan, so after all living in Tokyo may be the longing of everyone.

In my opinion, living in Tokyo is convenient and exciting in that there are many train lines to go everywhere I want to go sightseeing. In addition, Tokyo is one of the global city that many foreign people come, therefore we have a lot chances to interact with them and can learn different cultures, which will enriches our life. On the other hand, I think Tokyo has bad side,too. For example, Tokyo has too many people for its scale. It's is a severe problem. I'm from Niigata prefecture, so I'm not good at crowded place. In fact, even though Tokyo is special place, I'm going to back my hometown after graduating the university.

In my opinion, living in Tokyo is a lot of fun and very useful. Because Tokyo is the center of Japan, fashion is the latest. I like it very much, so I am glad to be able to buy and look at fashion items. Most events of models and artists are held in Tokyo. It is delightful. Also, a variety of household goods are sold in Tokyo, and public transportation is fulfilling. That is very convenient. But, there are too much people, so I do not like the urban center so much. I sometimes get tired of living in Tokyo, however, I think that it is pleasant and comfortable to live there.

It might be true that in Tokyo, people can easily obtain everything they want, and it is convenient for the residents to use transportation. However, I think living in Tokyo has a lot of negative points, especially for children. First, there are not enough space and nature to play or exercise in Tokyo. The experiences of playing outside are important for children in their lives. In my case, I am still in the habit of exercising, because I played outside every day in my childhood. Furthermore, even if there is space to play in Tokyo, such facilities provide many play equipment which already decide children how to play. On the other hand, since there are a lot of places which have no special play equipment in country side, such as open fields, playground, and forest, children are given chances to think how to play themselves. This creativity is necessary when they become adults. In conclusion, although living in Tokyo is convenient, it is less likely to be suitable when people bring up their children there.

In my opinon, smartphone has both of advantage and disadvantage. First of all, people can look for what they want to know anytime anywhere by using a smartphone. Some laptops are big and heavy, so people cannot carry it. But, people can pocket a smartphone, and it is easy to get information immediately. Furthermore, people can communicate with lots of people, even foreigners by SNS. However, as I said before, there are also some disadvantage. Nowadays, overusing of smartphone is brought into question in Japan. According to Asahi newspaper, Japanese high shcool girls use smartphone about for 7 hours in average. Watching the
display for a long time is bad for eyes, and it sharpen the time for study. In addition, SNS can be changed dangerous place of slander. I actually experienced that my classmate in my higi shcool wrote little bit abuse about me. There are many people like me, so SNS is not just fun.
So to summarize, using smartphone has both good and bad point, so I think people should use it with enough consideration.

In my opinion, living in Tokyo is very useful. Tokyo has a lot of stores, theme parks, railroads and so on. I like fashion so I am glad to there are many shops. Also I like theme parks. Tokyo has many theme parks so it is so fun! Furthermore, Tokyo has many railroads. I always use train to go to university and go to part time job. Trains always move on time so people are helped by trains. That's all, I think that living in Tokyo is so useful.

In my opinion, smart phones are very useful tools. Smart phones have many uses because there are many applications in them. For example, we can get much information immediately, so we can check a change of trains, search restaurants and even study. Also, we can communicate with many people. On the other hand, there are someproblems by using smart phones. We can write anything which have no common sense because we can access the Internet easily. And using smart phones during walking may cause an accident. However, I think that smart phones are really helpful if we use them properly. And I think that smart phones will evolve more in the future.

In my opinion, smart phones are very useful things. Many people have smart phones, so it is necesarry for our life. However, bullying is increaseing which use PC and smart phones. It is terrible problems in Japan. And it is difficult to notice bullying. Recently, a junior high school student killed by high school students. This cause is bullying with smart phones. So everyone couldn't notice bullying. Even if friends and parents. I shocked this news. Smart phone is so useful and necessary for our life. But sometimes it is dangerous.

The best Japanese food is sushi. I love many kind of sushi, for example tamago, uni, ikura, and akami. I stayed in Oxford to study last summer. Then i found that a lot of British people love eating sushi. I was glad to see it. Japanese food is very healthy and delicious. I hope a lot of people all over the world come to eat Japanese food.

In my opinion, smartphones are very useful, but sometimes they bother us. Every user knows smartphone's merits, people can use it everywhere,whenever and they can know whatever! However, I think it is bad to use smartphone when talking with someone. Many use them, in a train,when eating, walking, and even in a class. Always looking at smartphone narrows our field of vision. So, some accidents occer by smartphone. I don't think people shouldn't use them, but should make a role to use. By the way, do you know the word, phubing? It's a new word which means subbing phone. Stop phubbing and be careful to use them!

In my opinion, smart phones have both of advantage and disadvantage. Firstly, advantage is that people can get a lot of information or world news easily. Dictionary is too heavy to carry but smart phones are very light so people can search immidiately when they want to know about. On the other hand, smart phones's disadvantage is that cmommunication's ability will be down. Especially, line which most people use is only sentences, so it is difficult to show ambiguous emotions of mind. So people will be involved with trouble. Other disadvantage is that smart phones will have bad influence on eyes. I think that elementary students shouldn't have this. In conclusion, smart phones are very convinient in correct using, but it is aiso dangerous.
