IE3W Lesson 5: Paraphrases

10/29/2015

Hi everyone,

In just one more week, we'll be finished our first essay!

Paraphrasing:
In today's class, we learned about paraphrasing.  This is another way we can include information into our research papers from our sources.  When you paraphrase, you put the author’s ideas into your own words.   Even if you want to use general facts from your source, you still have to paraphrase this information.

Remember that some paraphrases need in-text citation and some paraphrases do not require it.
  1. general facts do NOT need in-text citation
  2. opinions, statistics and information that is not common knowledge NEED in-text citation

Before you paraphrase, you have to identify shared language (= words that you cannot change) and find synonyms for words that you can change.  This is the most important step in writing a good paraphrase.

This is a difficult skill to master and it often takes a long time to paraphrase information.  I even have trouble paraphrasing when I have to prepare research papers, too.  Be patient and don’t give up!

There are two things that I should remember before writing body paragraph 2 and 3. Firsty, I should write intext-citation correctly. In my body paragraph 1, I made a mistake in writing intext-citation because I did not understand perfectly how to write it. However, because I learned it again in today's class, I have a confidence to write it correctly. Secondly, I should use right articles in my body paragraphs. In my body paragraph 1, I sometimes forgot to give articles. Thus, I should be careful in giving articles correctly. The reason why it's important to make an outline before starting to write essay is that it will be easier to write paragraphs. If I don't make an outline, maybe my essay will not make sense. Therefore, I should make an outline before I start writing my essay.

2 things that I should remember before writing my body paragraphs are intext citation, and my information jumps across everywhere. For intext citation, I forgot to write the cite that was written. Also, I was absent the week before, so I couldn't understand how I could write it. However, I was glad to notice this before I write my other body paragraphs. Another thing is that my information jumps across the paragraph, which means the sentence changes suddenly. In my sentence, first it was about viewers in soccer. But after that the sentence suddenly summarizes the paragraph. My information jumped from viewer point of view to summarizing point of view.
The importance of making an outline is that you can orgaize what you want to write. If there is no outline, your brains might confuse. That's why it is good to make an outline.

The two points I should remember are that I should be careful with organization and put supporting idea. Firstly, when I wrote my BP1, I wrote some of information, disobeying the rule that I should write sentences from general to specific information. I wrote information in coontrary, so I shoud be careful to follow the rule. Secondly, in my BP1 I forgot to put supporting idea. So, I jumped the information from genaral to specific so suddenly. It would make readers confused. Therefore, I should pay attention to write more logically.
The reason why it is important to have an outline is that you can write correct inforaton in correnct places, so it make a writers to write easier and also make a readers to read easier your essay. In addition to this, you can organize your brain information before you write. Organizing brain information is tough job, so it would make your essay easier compared to not having.

Two points that I need to remember when I write body paragraph 2 and 3 are supporting ideas and using quotes. Since I tend to forget to write specific reasons of my essay, it often weakens the content. Moreover, I noticed that thanks to supporting ideas, readers would understand what I really want to tell easily during write it. And I tried to use quotes, especially expert's opinion, in my body paragraphs this time, so they would be much better than before, I guess.
I think the reason why having an outline before writing my essay is important is I can write my essay more correctly and clearly. Making mistakes in essay will not make sense and my opinion may not be understood by readers. And I can guess how I connect with each paragraph by having an outline. That's why I think that having an outline is really important.

Two points I need to remember when I write body paragraphs 2 and 3 are concluding sentence and intent-citation. At body paragraph 1, I forgot to wright it in my essay. So, my essay was not logical construction. Readers could not it smoothly. But at this time, I wrote concluding sentence. I think it will be better than before. Next, I should use intext-citation more carefully. i think The citation makes the essay better. But if I couldn't use it correctly, it would make the essay worse.
The reason I think it is important to have an outline before writing my essay is that I can write my essay more logically. If I start to write my essay without outline, the essay may be not logical and have some mistakes. Not to do so, I have to have an outline before i write my essay.

I was absent last week and I didn't feel good the day after so I couldn't come to school to receive my body
paragraph 1. But for body paragraph 2 and 3, I tried to make it clear and short. I had too many ideas writing body paragraph 1 which I couldn't put that all in within 150 words. This time, I tried to restrict the words while explaining my ideas clear enough. I didn't exceed the word limitation this time.

I think outline is very helpful because I can look back to my ideas. When I was about to write my body paragraph, I immediately start to look for my outline because I cannot remember in what way I should write it. Outline is like a reminder of my previous ideas. It helped me get my ideas clear when I was about to write the essay.

First of all, since I chose a too difficult topic, I changed the topic that is easier to write than the last one. I felt that it is most important to carefully choose the topic. Second, when I wrote a new essay, I made sure to always connect my states with the main idea. Lastly, I had to be careful to use a verb suitable for the situation. This is because I often used the same verb in my last essay. I tried harder in order to write a better essay.
To make an outline is so important because it helps us to write our essays easily. It is not good to write an essay without any plans. If we make outlines, we can be always aware of the main idea. Thanks to my outline, I could write my essay smoothly.

Two points that I need to remember are how to use intext citation properly and leaving out unnecessary information from my paragraph. For example, I used a statistic in my 1st body paragraph, but did not use intext citation for it. If I use intext citation, I can prove it is an authenticity data. Also, I tend to write something too general or unnecessary thing for my supporting ideas. The reason why it happenes is that I am so passionate about my topic and want my reader to know how much I love my topic boy bands. However, for readers, it is not their bussiness whether I love boy bands or not. On top of that, giving too much unnecessary sentences make my essay worse. Therefore, when I write my body paragraphs 2&3, I must care about it.

Before start writing body paragraphs, I did not really understand the importance of preparing an outline. Now, it helps me a lot. When I was writing a body paragraphs, I sometimes forgot what the point of my essay was. Then, I reviwed my outline and realized the point. In addtion, it made it easier to buid structures in each body paragraph. For these reasons, having an outline is important before writing my essay.

I think I did pretty well on body paragraph 1, but I still needed some corrections for some vocabularies and phrases. So I tried to use the best words for body paragraph 2 and 3. Also, there was a problem with my in-text citation, which I didn't put the author name in it because I couldn't find it anywhere. I tried to find the author name this time too, but I still had some problems, so I want to check out where I can find the author name in the next class. If don't put them in my essay, it will and can turn out very bad in many ways so I want to make sure about it.
The reason why it's important to make an outline before writing an essay is that you can be sure of what you are writing, and you can be well organized. If you don't organize what you are writing and if you write it without plans, your essay will be very messy and it will be hard for the readers to understand about what you are writing. Also, you can be more specific about the topic and be able to write more academically. By writing academically, readers can know about your topic more in detail. This means it will get easier for the readers to understand your topic. Outlines will also help the writer look back at the sentences you are writing. To write a best essay, using good words are essential, so outline is an important material when writing an essay.

Two points I need to remember when I write body paragraphs 2 and 3 are avoiding the logical breakdown and keeping the coherence of the paragraphs.
In limited words, I have to write what I would like to convey to readers, corresponding to
the roles, or functions of each sentence.
So, I care about not letting contradiction appear that causes the logical breakdown.
Also, I must pay attention to the coherence of the paragraph from the beginning to the
end.
In other words, I have to give consideration to the development of an argument, in order
not to make the topic scattered.
I think that keeping the coherence enables me to make my essay better.
I am sure that avoiding the logical breakdown and retaining the coherence of the paragraphs permit readers to appreciate what I think about the topic.

It is important for me to have an outline before I write my essay, so as to make the process of writing it more smooth.
If it were not for an outline, I would have difficulty in thinking about the contents and structure of my essay.
Thanks to an outline, I can concentrate on the details that will be the evidences of each topic when I write my essay.

First point that I should consider when I write BPs 2, 3 was how to use citations. The citations have to have
meaning and have to be the symbol of the main idea of paragraph. I had searched these very carefully.
Second point was the limitation of the number of words.
I had many things I wanted to write in essay but also have to simplify what I write about, so that the reader can easily understand.

I noticed the importance of outline when I was trying to simplify the BPs. First I started writing without outline, then the number of word was growing up and ended up with too long and ambiguous BP. After that, I made the outline and I came to know what I exactly wanted to write about.
So I finally understand the importance of outline.

The two important things I have to remember when writing body paragraph 2&3 are using the quote from an expert and put in some examples. I used the Internet to find the quotes of an expert, but there was no good interviews. So I had to write it from the ideas how the companies tried to make the product. I think this is the most useful point of making outlines. I think I should have find a good quote in this part. Another point I must remember is using examples. In the body paragraph 1, I had no examples because of being afraid becoming the paragraph long. After your check, I noticed that examples are more important than ambiguous statistics. In my topic, there are many examples-flavored,what kind of packages they are in, etc. So, in body paragraph 2&3, I tried to use examples as much as I can.
These are the points I had to remember when writing body paragraph 2&3.

Two points I need to remember when I write body paragraphs 2 and 3 are balance and to include examples. First, the length of all sentences should be about the same. Good balanced paragraphs make readers to understand sentences easier. Second, by including examples, I can support the point. Also it is important to confirm whether I can use examples correctly.

It is important to have an outline because I can write my esaay logically. Because of an outline, I can write my essay without missing the point. Also, it will help me write an organize essay.

One thing is I should be careful not to repeat my ideas. Sometimes, I don't realize that I'm repeating my ideas while I'm writing my essay. I realize that I am often doing that. The other thing is to make sure I use Italics in my essay. There are many mistakes in my essays . So I'm checking my essays before I turn it in . It is important to have an outline before writing your essays, because that way it will be more easy to start writing . It is a hard writing the essay and it will take more time without it. Having an outline makes your essay more steady and clear too. Your ideas won't be complicated and easy to read .

One of the two points that I needed to remember was to make the essay simple and understandable. When I wrote outline, my essay was so complicated because I didn't know what exactly to write. So I was careful to realize what I was writing to make it simple and understandable. The second one was to give some examples to make my essay believable. I think when I read other's essay, I can believe, understand and be interested in it better if there were some examples.
These are the two points that I remembered when I wrote BP2 and BP3.
I think the reason to have an outline before writing body paragraph is that I can have a guide line. I often lost what I wanted to write before. However, this time I could write my essay without losing my goal thanks to the outline. I think the good point of the outline is I can note anything and then set it in good order. While I am considering, my essay would be better I think. So both making and having an outline are so important for the good essay.
