Hi everyone,

I can't believe we've finished our first essay!  Just one more to go!

Revising and Editing:
In today's class, we learned about revising and editing. When you revise, you correct the content and structure of your research paper.  When you edit, you correct grammar and style mistakes.

You then have some time to work on your peer editing task.  For this task, you will revise/edit your partner's concluding paragraph.  You need to complete the following for this task:
  1. complete the Peer Editing Worksheet
  2. make revision corrections (using blue pen) on your partner's paragraph
  3. make editing corrections (using red pen) on your partner's paragraph
  4. Make a copy of the worksheet and your partner's concluding paragraph (with your corrections)

Conferences:
For our lesson on June 3, we will be having conferences. You will be able to discuss your first drafts with me in an individual meeting during class while other students revise/edit their drafts.  Make sure you prepare your list of questions for me before our conferences.

Computer Room for June 3:
For our conferences, we'll be in the computer room 216, so remember to bring a USB with your draft on it and your Aogaku ID card to access the computers.

Homework:
1.  Peer Editing Task
2.  Blog Comment #6
3.  Bring to class next week:
  • your peer editing task (and a copy for me)
  • your Aogaku ID card (to use the computers)
  • a USB with your essay file on it (to revise/edit in the computer room)

Blog Question #6:

What did you think of the peer editing task?
Answer the question directly - about the peer editing task you did for your partner (e.g. difficulties, what you learned, etc.). The question does not ask about the benefits of peer editing.

*Write 8-10 sentences.
*Use capitalization, punctuation & spelling correctly.
*Submit by Tuesday, June 2 by 6:00pm.

I actually had no fun at all. It was interesting and I did enjoy reading my friend's work, but after that is just tough. I'm not confident in my grammar but to check someone else? I'm too scared to go for it. To be honest I just want to chicken out but I guess I have to do this. Perhaps if I endure here I might be better at this one day.
Now I know how it feels to be like a teacher or professor. But after all, I think was a good opportunity to actually do it and learn it for myself.

I think it is very important to re-examine our essay objectively. This is because we can realize we made more mistakes than we had expected. We may be shocked to see many red and blue corrections. However, these corrections help us improve our final draft. I also thought it was very difficult to correct my friend’s essay. I felt I don’t want to criticize my friend through the correction, but I had to. Nicole told me that the purpose of this peer editing task is to correct our friend’s essay from a critical position. I think we should learn from our friend’s mistakes and make effective use of them to improve our own essay.

I think that checking our essay again before we edit is very important. If there's something wrong, such as grammatical mistakes or structure mistakes, our essay can't be understood by anyone who read our essay. Accuracy in our essay makes our essay more understandable and logically. Also, it was so difficult for me to correct the essay of others because of my lacking of my English skill. To correct someone's mistakes in their essay, we should pay attention to grammar or structure not only when we check the essay but also when we write out essay. By doing so, we can write the essay more accurate in grammar or structure from the beginning. I think that we can learn from other's mistakes in grammar or essay structure and our skill of English writing will improve. So I want to improve my skill not only through writing my essay but also through correcting other's essay. Then, I will be able to make use of the knowlegde or the skill in the future.

I think that doing peer editing task give us opportunity to read other people's essay. From this experience, we can learn things that we didn't recognize in our own essay. For example, by checking others' essay, I found that my essay was lack of phrases. I think we can learn a lot from othres.
Moreover, we can be more critical when we read others' essay. Because sometimes , it is difficult to find mistakes in our own essay.
I have found several things which I can improve in my essay, so I would like to better in the next one.

I thought the peer editing task was difficult since I never edited someone else's work before. All this time, we had the techer check our work, so we didn't have any chances to learn how tough it is to find grammar mistakes. When I read my partner's paper, I couldn't find any mistakes at first. It actually took a really long time to edit it. I read the paper about 20 times to see if there were any other mistakes. I believe the peer editing task should be done neatly so that your partner could learn the mistakes they made. I also learned from this task the difficulties of becoming an English teacher. I thought that if I want to become one, I need to work on my grammar more.

Peer editing allowed me to check whether I actually understood what I was supposed to care in writing. By correcting peer's essay, I had the opportunity to look back on my essay. It was as if I had become the teacher and it made me understand deeply. To teach or correct, we need to comprehend the matters thoroughly. Thus, that was the point I really care about. Because I could not make another mistake by correcting something already being mistaken. Furthermore, not only structure mistakes but spelling and grammar mistakes was the things that I really had to pay attention. Since I am not a native English speaker, it was tremendously difficult for me to tell whether it was mistake or not.
Having the opportunity of peer editing, I became more aware and careful with my writing or Learning English itself.

I found it hard to look for mistakes in the sentence, because there were not so many mistakes. I learned how important writing sentences in a properly organized way is, and that proper grammar is an essential factor. Whenever I write, I tend to use the same word over and over again, so by using synonyms, I think the reader can enjoy the passage. Editing another person's writing was a painful task. I just don't like critisizing other people! But by doing so, I understood how easily people can make mistakes and that peer editing is an indispensable task.
It might be because I did peer editing for the first time, but I had to look at the example symbols many times to suss out what mistake was in the sentence. But again, I really understood the importance of this task.

Doing peer editing was really hard for me. I am really bad at grammer, so it was hard for me to find the mistakes. I couldn't find any. Kana's concluding paragraph seemed so perfect to me. Even finding the structure mistakes. I thought that it would be easier to find others mistakes, but it wasn't. It was harder than I've expected. I also thought that if I once thought that the sentence is right, I cant think that in another way. I just stick to my first tought, so I tought that is my bad habit in writing.

Peer editing was really difficult. It was my first time to do this activity so I did not know what to do at the beginning. My partner's essay seemed to have any mistakes which made the editing very easy. However, since my grammar is in a low level, I think I would not be able to find them even if there were. From my point of view, I think if something isnt understood, it is very difficult to find mistakes. For this activity, we were supposed to find mistakes and correct them. I dont have full knowledge for english writing so when I read new style of writing, I automatically think it is perfectly right whether if it is correct or not. By actually doing peer editing, I was able to realize that writing perfect essays are really difficult.I thought we have to have a deep understanding in order to edit properly. When we get our essays edited, I think we are able to find out something new in writing.

It was difficult for me to do the peer editing task. However, it was also fun for me to read the peer's essay. As we both had topic about at the same period although mine was about music and her's was about painters, it was very interesting. The hardest point for me was grammar. Since she did not write summarize of the body paragraphs, I could not find a lot of mistakes. In addition, I am not good at grammar, so it was a hard work for me to do. Through peer editing for the first time, I learned how hard teachers are working for us. Also I definitely think that this experience work for my next essay.

It was very interesting to see other people's essay through peer editing task. It gave me opportunities to see different grammar mistakes and structures we could use through the essay.
Although, it was also very hard. I am not good at grammar so it was difficult to find the mistakes in the first place. Even if I did, I was always unsure if I have corrected in the right way. I felt that I have to strengthen my grammar.

By peer editing my partner's essay, I thought it difficult because my checking has to be exactly correct. I had some pressure so I read over and over again. I have never checked other person's essay before but I got to read the partner's, which was interesting and learned a new things that will help in my daily lives so my partner and I both had merits.
But I don't think I can be a teacher or a professor since it took time.

I felt that the peer editing task was not easy for me. I have never done peer editing before, so I didn't know exactly what to do. Finding mistakes it self was hard, but looking at the correction symbols and correcting them was even harder. On top of that I am not good at grammar, and i just learned how to write a formal essay, but I feel that correcting other essays really helps us improve our writing. It was also interesting because I got to read another person's essay. Peer editing was hard, but it allowed me to learn more about righting by editing another person's essay.

I didn't really enjoy the task of peer editing my partner's essay, mainly because of how time consuming it was. It was also quite challengin to correct other people's work. I could find mistakes, but had some trouble correcting them based on the criteria. I definitely appreciate the work that teachers do more now as I go a slight glimpse of what it's like. I am glad that I didn't dream of becoming a teacher when I was little.

I believe that peer editing gave me a chance to read someone elses essay. I must say that this was a great opportunity to understand my friend a little better. The downside about this assignment was definitely the lack of mistakes. Due to our great technology, Microsoft or whatever software others uses, corrects most of the spelling or grammar mistakes, and it was impossible to find 10 mistakes.

It was harder than I expected to do peer editing. It was because concluding paragraph was short paragraph and there was not much to correct. Microsoft word has aoutomatic correction system so I think it has already corrected grammatical mistakes before I did peer editing. But if I was good at grammar, I could have made my partner's essay better.
However, it was good practice to find what was good and bad about the essay. Being able to recognize good points and bad points is important for not only essay but also for daily life. I am looking forward getting my essay back and seeing it. Then I will be able to know what mistakes I have made and whether people could understand what I meant.
