Hi everyone,
I hope everyone had a great Golden Week vacation, and you're well-rested for a busy May. Irony: At the beginning of our lesson, we continued with literary terms. We started with situational irony. This type of irony occurs when the outcome of an event or situation is the opposite of what is expected. The result can range from the humorous to the tragic. We completed a short pair activity on making our own ironic endings. Theme: We then moven onto literary terms, and looked at theme. The theme of a novel is the message from the author. This is what he/she wants you to learn or the main character to learn. You can ask yourself these questions when thinking about the theme:
Checking Understanding: Before our discussions, we reviewed expressions that you can use to check your group's understanding. You can use these expressions; a. Are you following me? b. Are there any questions? c. Do you understand? Also, when you don't understand during a discussion, you can ask these questions: a. Can you explain that again? b. What was that again? c. What does ... mean? (when you don't know a word) Homework: 1. Discussion preparation 2. Journal Topic #5:

I found some symbols in my graded reader. For one, “soma,” which is a kind of drug, and which makes people calm down and happy, symbolizes the force of controlling citizens. When people feel uncomfortable, sad, or angry, they take soma to become happy or calm. Although people never make any conflicts, because they can easily get happy anytime with the drug, it is dangerous that they cannot live without soma, which means that they are completely controlled by the manager of the society. Another symbol is the writings of Shakespeare. John, who is a savage, had it and often quoted form it in the story. The writing expresses “emotions,” “intense,” and “passion,” that people in the civilized society do not have, but John, not created by managers, have.

I read "Frankenstein". A scientist named Victor Frankenstein made ugly monster. I think there are two themes in the book. One theme is why a scientist made a monster against god. I understand that his friends and wife's deaths by Frankenstein made by a scientist are judgement on me for making monster. Another theme is a scientist's revenge against Frankenstein. In the end, he died before killing Frankenstein and asked Walton, his friend, to kill Frankenstein, but Frankenstein mourned his death.

The symbols of my gradesd reader are notebook and the white house. The former is the one Ally wrote before. Noah tried her to recall by reading it. It's their precious memory. The latter is a house they came together before and promise to live. After they are separated, They can see again because Ally read a newspaper prioted it and Noah. It's their promise in their heart. I think the theme of my graded reader is to believe the possibility. Nevertheless Ally is Alzheimer's disease, Noah never give up her recallying their memory, so they can spent a short happy time in the last.

The first symbol is ghosts. I think ghosts are not only scared existence but also the important opportunity to know the truth. Although it is like fantasy story, I think ghosts appear when they have something they want to say. Thus, people can notice the truth thanks to ghosts. Second symbol is feeling of cold. When Cole, the boy who has the sixth sense, see the ghosts, he becomes to feel cold. I think sense of cold is like feeling sad. Therefore I think these two are this story’s symbol.

I found the symbol in my graded reader. It is "journey". I think surface meaning is that going around the world in eighty days. Main character decides to go the journey because he and his club member likes gamble. He bet the half property on that he can get back home in eighty days. And deeper meaning is related to climax. Deeper meaning is that going around the world produce nothing but it attracts all people.people can't resist desire that want to go journey.
